Yeah, but my point is that with a NORMAL distribution of data. That would be the "Global Averages." That's like every video reviewed which is a much better data set than one person Especially when said person's majority of reviews are videos that are on one end of the spectrum. It obviously biases the data.alternatefutures wrote:That's why I want more people to contribute. Plus, ah, they're good by your standards, maybe not by mine.
By the same token, looking at the global averages, one can see the massive amounts of grade-inflation which I won't deny is already there. But yeah, my main point is that my averages are higher than "average" since like 30 of 39 videos I've reviewed are "A-like" videos and thus mostly 9's and 10's given.
So yeah, your point is flawed and the results as well.

Well, look at it this way. If 5 is average, and I've been making vids for 3.5 months and I have a review average of 8.325 out of 85 ops, that would mean I'm a prodigy. Now, do we really think I'm a prodigy? No. So I'm guessing the average has to be at least a *little* higher than 5, at least a good 6.5. And for another person to compare with, my reviews given average is 7.786 from 145 ops. That meets close enough to the average of 7, and I've had a wide range of vids - from fuzzy little newbie vids to the very nice ones. I think I rate a bit too high most of the time, but I do aim for 7 being normal and still get a total average not too far from 7 (it's over because the newbie vids I'm opping are getting better and I haven't found myself some new ones yet ^_~ ).
This is fun, but you can compare numbers all you want. The only way to really know what the 'global' average is would be to do the math with every review given on the org. And that's not an option unless Phade is keeping some stats hidden for research purposes. ^_^;

Hmm, is the "olympic style" scoring in effect? [I'm too lazy to check...]
[highest/lowest scores for a vid are tossed into the trash]
Well, instead of saying who's doing what to whom [ewww] I'll do a double take on EC's explanations...
10s: if you get a 10 in anything, I was blown away... Especially reviewable (Master's Vid) A sign of someone who has a VERY good idea of what I think is a good video. I think I'm known as a stickler for timing issues...
9s: Missed a spot here or there. Pixellation in capture... weird sound, etc. etc.
8s: It's good and con worthy. Still, that -2 can be from bad full screen results (if I can't watch it in all the fullscreen glory, that's pretty harsh for me...) Sounds fine, but when the volume goes up, the quality goes the other way... I've seen some vids that are [TOO FUDGING dark...] ^_^
7s: Now you're reaching the border between "The greatest" and "the good-est". My bare minimum in Reviewable for "Masters Vids"
6s: Gotta work on cleaning your footage, making an action combat amv using DBZ (oh yeah, original), sounds like an elephant who swallowed a man... etc. etc.
5s: MY average. I don't mind people screaming at me for "WHY'D I get a 5?!" One, the site said so... Two, I've left my easy grading days for one big reason: I want people to improve faster... etc. etc. [see previous explantions...] 5 is a strong enough message saying the video will work for you, just not for me, and perhaps maybe not for other people I know... (just an opinion, right? ^_^) The vid didn't look as good as digisub anime (being a digisub editor myself, it's not hard to clean the damn stuff...) i.e. Guardian Hearts eps. 1-2 0_0 whoa...
4s and below: I will do my DARNEST to explain in heavy detail why this is so. Time stamps, timing issues, filter problems, possible avs scripting, the works... I don't need people looking at da scores thinking [why'd I get this!?] when the explanation is like a page long...
Being most opinionated means two things:
1. My eyes hurt ~_~
2. I think I know what I'm talking about... :\
3. I'm not really biased toward anything. Just cause I love upbeat music and actually gun for "Drama in the Dance video" doesn't mean I dislike the good soft mushy stuff... [yes dwchang, you're Glory of Love pwned!!]
Let's see, [tries to see if ops are still needed...]

As I stated at the very FIRST post, grading is all relative and it's really quite pointless for us to even be discussing this. To have some universal grading system and for all of us to agree to it is to pretty much blot out that which makes our reviews different.alternatefutures wrote:The results aren't flawed, as you DO have an overall average that is 1.15 off and mine is .60 off. Conclusions are a different matter entirely. Plus, I'd say if you were routinely giving out 10s even with a 7 point average you're being overly generous, even when dealing with "A-like" videos.
Regardless...the reason your results are flawed are because I don't rate *every* type of video. For a true average to be established for ANYONE would require them to rate EVERY video on the .org and then figure out the averages. Thus, the results will be flawed for any of us. Mine are obviously higher since I have rated videos I like and some may be lower since they rate videos that aren't that "good."
As for "A-like" videos, again...I have a different standard than you and thus I am more prone to give 10's on certain things. For example, I am a lot more prone to giving 10's out for effort since I don't belittling someone's work by saying they didn't "try hard enough." Given, perhaps they could require more work, but at the same time I don't like doing it and thus my "Effort" score is highly inflated (a 9.13 or something).
So again, this argument is pretty pointless since there is no standardized grading system and it'd be kind of pointless (and impossible) to even try. So my advice is the same with video making, do what you wanna do and give what you wanna give.
In the end, it's just numbers right? We're arguing over a bunch of numbers. Pretty trivial if you ask me.

Lots of people dislike my 6.XX which comes out when they see my "scores given" for reviewable since reviewable is like freakin' 30% of your consideration for top 10%dwchang wrote:Given, perhaps they could require more work, but at the same time I don't like doing it and thus my "Effort" score is highly inflated (a 9.13 or something).
I'll stomach any video now. The thing is, I get this weird [Ominous?] feeling that people DON'T want me to op them due to my "evil" scoring habits... [evil? I've seen well beyond 300+ vids, my ops aren't 2 sentences in length either...]
Besides, I'm only one op! Get like 8 and my "lowly evil score" should drop off the avg list... [I think...]

It's good to be picky. Can't have all these 9s and 10s running around sweet and then you and I show up and POW, 6 for reviewable... [once a month? it's not THAT bad is it? ^_^]Arigatomyna wrote:Heh, my review average is at 6.69, the lowest of my given scores, so I don't think you're alone there. Some of us are picky, that's all. ^_^

What people should be striving for is consistency in their scoring.
I created a rubric for myself because I wanted to try to have a framework to work within.
So long as you are not erradic with your style of scoring, and really try and provide honest, helpful explanations about the scores and reasoning behind them; I don't see why the scores/averages people recieve should be that big a deal.
