It goes both ways. They also now have someone with deep pockets who is willing to stand up for it. I think we are going to see some interesting legal battles ahead, and they are very much needed to pain a clear picture of how far people's rights extend these days.

Some of the comments on that video are funny.

"Good luck to all the youtube staff :) But the thing it bothers me the most is if they're going to let us upload anime... about 1/4 of the views are from that and it's the reason youtube is more visited than google.video, they examine every single video uploaded, you not, please keep up the good work and let us enjoy anime: owned videos are in other sites like metacafe or google.video, but this site is special because you're free to upload whatever you want (of course non-offensive videos)" -NaSeRTKD

"but it's 100% legal to make AMV'S and share them with the world! this videos are 100% fan made and they are standing in no way assoicated to the anime or music corporationin any way!" -ThaRealKevmasta

"Sell out! If google deletes all our AMVs I think I'll phisically KILL someone." -SessKo

The irony to this is that Sunrise, Inc. had a shit fit and ordered a fatwa removing all Youtube videos that contain content from Sunrise shows. The copy of "Big Damn Cowboys" I had there for general public consumption got yanked because of its Cowboy Bebop content, but ironically the side-by-side comparison of "Big Damn Cowboys" with the original Firefly opening didn't get the axe.

It remains to be seen how strict Google will be with content.

From Bauzi:
lol That´s a really nive comment and I think this happens to people who don´t know the org and high quality amvs. :P

Something, that would be great about the whole video stream stuff:
Studios host the first episode of an anime on stream and so the have a good advertising for the anime, `cause we know all, that hostachel is well visited.

To the WB-music thing:
Maybe they see now, that this could be also a really good publicity for buying music. Maybe I would have a lot more money, if I would not know AMVs and anime :P The anime studios already see the "trailer effect" in amvs. So it was really time for the music branche.

I know somebody, that is going to launch a side to host complettly legal amvs. It took up years to talk to all the stuidos, labels and so on and there are still some to go. Also he needs a lot of money, so he was searching (and founding) sponsors. The whole thing would already work now for streams and downloads (not always... deepends on the music used and so on...).
What I want to say with this example: The whole project took years and eats a lot of ressourcen. WB step maybe was one of the first steps to make it all more legal or totally legal.

It's happened before (though not on YouTube as far as I know), so maybe it'll happen again.

i donno one of my friends had her account deleted (off of youtube) by 4Kids so not all the anime companies are happy about the online distro of their material...

they might support it at conventions and what not but they might not like online distro... :/

This is happening on other fronts: Universal and EMI (perhaps others by now) have signed with SpiralFrog which will be offering free and legal music and video (advertiser supported, probably with some re-use restrictions).

It's 4kids though. Why would you take them seriously? They don't follow the bunch of other anime distributing companies, they edit the shit out of everything they get rights to. Maybe it's because of their name. It sort of demands edits so what they release is for kids.
