I'd been thinking about doing this one for a while, but it was a review of Cowboy Bebop on an episode of The Signal podcast, which is all about Joss Whedon's Firefly TV series and its cinematic sibling Serenity.
This was the motivation I needed to finally get together the footage to remake the opening title sequence of Firefly using clips from Cowboy Bebop.
Primary editing was done in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5. The false-color stills of the characters were created in Photoshop as were the gradient masks for them. These were then compositied into Premiere as track mattes.
Adobe After Effects was used extensively here, most notably for the Trapcode Shine plugin, which is used with almost all of the text effects.
I had the Firefly OP sequence running in another window almost all throughout the editing process, in an effort to get the timing as close as possible. Just about every shot in that sequence had a counterpart in Cowboy Bebop whether it be a character smiling, walking, pointing a gun, and so on. Some were tougher than others... for example, there are next to no horses in Bebop except for Andy's horse in "Cowboy Funk", so it got the nod. Some are almost too good of a match, as evidenced with River in the hibernation crate and its Bebop counterpart, Ein in the suitcase.
I have my wife to thank for suggesting that Andy fit better in Jayne's spot instead of Vicious. She was absolutely right, of course.
If there is enough interest I may upload a side-by-side comparison of the two title sequences so that everyonecan see how closely these two match.
