But look at the genre - it's a comedy fanservice video. Try comparing two action vids (one effect-laden, one bare), or two drama vids, or two romance vids. Comparing across genres makes a big difference when it comes to comedy. A comedy video depends on the humor, scene selection, more than anything else. Aside from crossovers (insertions), or lip sync, I haven't seen many effect-laden comedy vids.Zarxrax wrote:The Fanservice Video: Bouncing Back For More (2002-04-26)godix wrote:If you have an effect only video go compare it's ratings to your more meaningful ones, on my videos there's almost an entire point difference in the star ratings (none of mine have enough ops to reasonably compare their scores).

No real effects. Wow thats a lot of opinions. And the star rating is very close.
Digital Effect vids vs. Simple Digital Effects or none vids.

Biggest piece of shit video I have released in the past 2 years. Note it has more downloads than my magnum opus, TheStarMan.
I think the results are blantantly obvious here.

...damn... I just realized Starman had boobies too... well there goes THAT theory.

Weren't we just arguing a day or two ago that the download counter meant jack squat?

Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't considered that aspect before. I have just decided that my next AMV will be titled BOOBIES! regardless of what anime or genre it is. Here's hoping I don't decide to make another suicide video or something like that next...Zarxrax wrote:I think the results are blantantly obvious here.

Star count is effectively a download counter, one that works accurately. Not that I really care that no one is downloading my video, just using it for purpose of demonstrating the point. Although feel free to replace "more downloads" with some other random value, like number of opinions, or number of words in the video description, whatever the hell you want. Numbers are what wins arguments ;ptrythil wrote:

I don't have any 'good' effect vids to use as comparison, but of my romance vids, the ones with the 'pretty' songs aimed at the fans of the pairings are the ones that score highest. Working with anime girls tend to like, a soft, pretty song and pretty scenes work great. But that's when you have no effect vids to use as comparison. If you're comparing two soft simple videos in the same genre, you can usually tell when the song is making all the difference. I can usually tell ahead of time how a video is going to 'rank' just based on the song choice. I like some generally 'unpopular' music. ^_^;

I've read over all of the responses and they were all great responses but there's one thing you have to understand. The majority is silent. To us, the regular org goers who have nothing better to do than watch AMVs all the time and to the ones here on the forums who create videos we all look for a story and more behind the video and stuff like that.
But the majority are not us. The majority fall into the Hollywood factor. It's like comparing Ebert to a regular joe who doesn't watch and review movies constantly. Granted I think Ebert is blowing it out his ass alot of the time but still you see the comparison. In Hollywood, effects sell, however to people whose (in a way) lives revolve around films they require more. But majority is going to be sold by pretty special effects. There's some videos that are pretty highly rated on the star scale that are effects heavy and I really do not enjoy watching them. But I've been watching and reviewing AMVs since the late 90's so I tend to want more. Some people only watch an AMV every once in awhile and some people have very little experience in anime itself outside of what is played on Cartoon Network, so to them visual effects are going to be a big seller.

Alright, that's it... I've decided what my masterpiece is going to be. I'm going to digitally add boobies onto dancing Vash and have that play for two or three minutes with... Bring Me to Life.Zarxrax wrote:I think the results are blantantly obvious here.

Maybe at the same time blend the audio with "In the End" and you've got yourself a video that'll never drop below 5 on the star scale.flint_the_dwarf wrote:Alright, that's it...
