oh crud, I missed the release

Sorry - was at a con. I'll be sure to d/l them today - and probably op them as well, since as I think I've mentioned before, Queen II is by far my favorite Queen album, and I used to be into Queen quite a lot...
and I'm just getting into Princess Tutu, also.

We'll see, just wait until I get home (in about oh, 10 hours ~_~)

thank you, otohiko, your opinions are especially valuable given your relative experience and good critical eye.

and i'm glad you're getting into tutu. i'm afraid i really can't do it justice with my videos, and both the writing and the artwork take on an incredible depth and dimension as the series progresses. i'm still blown away by how well the series was crafted - far beyond anything i can even imagine coming up with myself.

i'm also glad to have taken on this project, if only for the sake of finding out about those songs. i have both of queens "greatest hits" collections, but i never explored the band outside of those two albums (despite the fact that my parents have all of their studio albums on vinyl - damn lack of working turntable). i was very pleasently surprised upon hearing them (enough to buy the actual cd the next time i'm in a record store). good stuff - and yet another component of this set that i'd be hard pressed to fully do justice to. i am humbled in the presence of the true artists.

of course, a runner always runs faster when alongside a faster runner. maybe the track coaches have the right idea.

Relative experience? Relative indeed

(watches vids)

Oh wow.

You know, drawbacks aside, I love both these vids. Are they great vids? No, and to be sure - I'd say they could use more of what most of the vids (besides maybe those by the obsessed 'technocrats', the likes of which mastered effects usage and over-usage) could use more of - editing time. I think the slight 'economy' on cuts in certain places resulted in some some cool opportunities being missed. More beat/instrumental sync would have helped, but I'm more concerned about 'mood contrast sync'. That said though...

White Queen was very good; the mood match worked excellently, BUT - I gotta say there are two major opportunities I consider to be missed there - there's no real transition when the 'sitar' solo comes in, and when the climactic part blasts in. My point would be that there's a lot of pretty sharp musical contrast, but no real sharp and immideate transition (if any) in the visuals.
The way you dealt with the ending was excellent though.

Black Queen was even better I think. Again though, the thing with the 'contrast sync' - the first major transition is again a bit missed (to the calm part), but the second one actually came off very well. Again, I like the way the conclusion is dealt with.

I'll use this as a kickoff point for 'formal ops' later, since I want to go really thorough on these 2 (because, again, with your music choices and the way you find the right footage for them shows a lot of potential and I'll try to give you as much technical feedback as I can). I probably won't be able to finish those for a couple of days.

Would I want to 'do a better job myself'? Almost. But, if anything, I think this makes me want to try a Tutu AMV soon myself...

My general conclusion - you have the right idea, it's the execution that needs improvement. Myself, I'm surprised, because the music/anime match turned out even better than I expected.

thank you otothiko. i'll take a look at those transitions you are talking about tonight (i'm pretty sure of what you mean with "white queen", but i might have really missed something with "black queen").

oh - and i have to give sheana credit for the music choices on these two. she is the one who started this thread and all - though, come to think of it, it looks like she hasn't been here in a while.

i am glad you liked my scene choices - i was a little worried about redundancy with the "echoes" video, as i did many small sub-second edits on some of the scenes to strengthen the timing, but the overall feel or continuity within a scene was generally left alone (maybe i have to stop using tutu for a while, it goes so well with almost anything - kind of like mid-era pink floyd - that it encourages too much laziness on my part as i look for connections between the clips and music instead of looking for clips that fit the music on a moment-to-moment basis).

in any case, i seem to be developing a process and a feel for that process, and i'm looking forward to working on my next one when i next have the time.

just watched these two videos again - definately see what you're talking about with there being no significant transition with the sitar (or heavily chorused guitar, it's hard to tell in the mix), though that one didn't really register in my mind as a major transition. the scene with the knights came in too early, though, to be sure - it looks like the viewer misses the climax there because i had to go and arrive early with the video.

for black queen, i'm not sure if what you mean is with the missed "calming" transition is that i didn't bring it down to calm enough a pace, or that the scenes leading up to it were too still to really draw a contrast. i'm sure your op will say, so i'll just speculate with the latter for time being.

and hopefully bunnymm figured out how to use the site (still have no idea how she'd end up in this thread looking for videos).

Well, I just op-ed 'White Queen' - give me more time, and the second one will be up there as well.

I hope the detailed timing breakdown clears up what I found in terms of stuff that worked and stuff that didn't...

I think what I said at the end of the op is reflective of how I'd judge this vid.

And oh, from what I see so far, I think that 'ratio' I talked about is probably somewhat higher on the 'positive' side for 'Black Queen'.

Blast, I can't download them! There's something wrong with the source and it won't let me copy, or something. Rose, is there another way I can get them? :?
