So lets sum up this thread:

"To Each His(her) Own"

Fin.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

This slump is comfy.
Especially since YOU'RE the one on sitting at the top of it. [WOOT ^_^]

Making good amvs takes a long time usually and that's probably the reason why there's soooo few good ones and VERY MANY bad ones...

Now if 50% of the vids can come out the likes of Euphoria, Odorikuruu, and Twilight, life would be good, but sinces over 90% is shitty amvs, 50% of which is Linkin' Bark Z, then yeah, it's the eternal slump.

HOWEVER! I may encourage, that making an amv that's better than average has become MUCH easier as of late ^_^

I've seen a few people piss and cry like toddlers when they don't win a contest, but that's awfully rare. Does anyone even have a notion of standards on an AMV? I figure the bar's as low as not having subtitles, interlacing, or a DivX logo, and then the judging proceeds from there.
You've been here four years? I can't believe that.
The first thing a new member of the org learns is "don't share if you don't want to be judged." That implies a standard. The standard is determined by the most vocal members of the forum, who, as this thread shows, are the ones for whom competition is the most fun aspect of making amvs. Thus the second thing a new member of the org learns is "don't share if you don't want to be judged by people whose main enjoyment of this hobby is trying to outdo one another." These days the third thing they learn is "if you don't like us ignoring or bashing your crap vids, go to the tube - even your crap will get feedback over there."

If you've lasted four years without seeing any of this, you either made good enough videos to slip in without going through the "improve fast or go to the tube because you're not good enough" test, or you're competitive enough yourself that you took the "do, die, or go somewhere else" atmosphere for granted. Even the people in this thread who post saying they edit for enjoyment (that isn't derived from competition) are better than the average newcomer. I'd be shocked if anyone who's posted in this thread is a bad editor. Mediocre, sure (I'm posting), but not bad. Bad editors don't stick around the forum long unless they're here to crack jokes and bash even worse editors.

Yep. The ones who don't enjoy competition get less happy and less active every year. But on the flip side, the competitive ones enjoy themselves more the higher the bar gets, and that makes them more vocal, so they make up for the missing ones. The org has two mission statements. The one before you log in on the main page talks about "general enjoyment of amvs". It's false advertisement. Once you log in and check the FAQ you get the "ultimately have everyone creating and enjoying better videos" line. Funny how they wait till a new member joins up before mentioning the ultimate goal of the site is to have people make better amvs.

Even funnier that the "ultimate goal of listing all amvs" comes after the "ultimate goal" of "improving people". Like someone just tagged that second sentence on to pretend the org's purpose didn't shift after Phade retired. You don't improve amvs in general without comparing them. Comparing is pitting one against the other. In other words, competition. Hence the ultimate goal of the org is to make editors compete against each other. Anyone who says the goal of the org isn't to make editors outdo one another hasn't read the mission statement.

...

As for the slump... No. The editing in mediocre vids today is great compared to the mediocre ones in 2003. I don't think it's the videos. It's the people making them and the ones watching. The people complaining about a slump haven't made much lately. Why not? Lost your motivation? Got disillusioned by the forum? Started to question the entire point of sharing amvs on the org? Too busy mourning the good ole days to try and recapture it? If you really think there's a slump, PM those who have similar sentiments and get together and do something about it. You can't change the mindset of the forum, but you can have plenty of fun forming a cliche on the main site and sharing vids among yourselves. Who cares if the vids other people make seem soulless and repetitive? Everyone complaining is an editor. If you don't like what they make, make something you do like. That's the whole point of fanworks.

I stopped watching amvs after downloading a handful of "new" top 10 vids and not finding a single one that didn't bore me. It can't be the vids, not with that many random selections. It's gotta be me. I'm just not as interested as I used to be. But even without having enjoyed them, I can say the editing quality for all of them was quite high. The editors are still turning out quality products, this consumer just isn't buying anymore.

you think long and hard about these things don't you Mina lol. Most (all) of that is true but if you didn't wanna read it it's just a lengthy statement saying 'the elite survive, the hobbyist die off, only the good die young... blah blah blah... you all take this stuff WAY too seriously... blah blah blah' You bring up interesting points every time, but you never change your tone! lol it's just kind of funny.

Anyway I feel anime music videos IS on it's last hurrah and quite possibly has for some time. But that does leave something, the last KAMPAI!!! Enjoy it while it lasts.

Not so much bitching

In that case should we be the ones to finish it off then?

It's fun where I am. Why change? I might not be making or watching vids, but as long as I still get ops on the old stuff, the org is stuck with me de-lurking now and then. The horse ain't gonna beat itself, right? 8-)

I know I'm in a slump. That, or I'm just procrastinating (more).
