Synch is very important, but sometimes when you go to much in to a synch video loses it's mining, every thing in moderation.

"music video..."

If that doesn't mean matching every action/scene in your anime to your music, whether it be by beat or by lyric...

you fail... :P
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

Synching to every aspect of a song is good. Knowing when to back off and let the vid breathe is better. I've seen videos that weren't 'effectsy' but had every little thing synched, and they become almost exhausting to watch after the first couple of minutes.

generally, synch won't hurt your video unless it breaks up the flow or theme of the video (which i see ALL the time with lyric synched videos). another consideration on toning down on beat/music synch is if you really want to emphasize an element in the music (say a sequence of piano chords) - it can be more effective to synch ONLY on the music element you want to emphasize.

You can also synch your stuff to an non-prominent instrument, like a free moving bass line or something. It doesn't have to be all drum hits etc.
