I find judging AMVs is easy.
If it's made by metro it's over-rated overly technical piece of shit.
If it's made by Decoy it's an over-rated overly technical piece of winamp visualization shit.
If it's made by inthesto it's just pure shit. A big pile of steaming crap. The type where if you found a rose blooming in middle of the crap it'd turn out the rose gave off the smell of crap and it's thorns pricked you.
If it's made by trythil it's artistic. Or perhaps autistic. Or, more likely, both.
If it's made by Aqua or Ileia it involves anal rape in one way or another. If you don't catch the anal rape the first time around keep watching, eventually you'll feel raped.

I'm not too judgemental. Which is all-too-well evidenced by my 4.42 star average
I have (or had, rather) a simple system for ops - if nothing bothers me about a particular aspect of the video, it gets a 10 in that. If I see any sort of issue or issues with it, I dock a proportionate number marks off. And so it goes on.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

If it's identical in every specification to this video, then it's awesome.

It depends on what you mean by "technically." If you're judging the video for overall value, the the action sync should definitely be weighted more. If there's a specific category for "Best Technical," then audiovisual quality and placement of effects get a higher priority because it's the technical aspects of the video that are being acknowledged.

Re: Judging AMV's
This is the judging system I will be using for AMV Hell Championship Edition events that I judge, so start pandering now.genestarwind21122 wrote:This is a breakdown when I judge videos for a contest in order.
1. Action Sync (is the up most importantce. The lyrical sync, beat sync and the flow of the video.)
2. Lip Sync/ Digital Effects - These two are group together because all videos don't have them, but if they are done/ used properly and executed well that's were the determining factor in most cases. So lets just say if there was one video with special effects and the other had none. If the special effects in the one video helps the video out by focusing on the story or enhances the video so it isn't eye candy then yes the special effect one will win because it is technically better than a video that has just action sync eventhough it may be executed perfectly. But if the special effects are just thrown in there and have no meaning then the video with no effects will win because it was done technically better.
3 and 4. Capture Quality - The capture quality if it is liveable (7.5/10 or higher) and you executed everything else then this may not effect your video even if the other video has a 9 in capture quality because you executed everything else very well and the other video may not have. But if both videos were executed well then it may come down to capture and sound quality. Same goes for sound quality.

You might want to refer to the judging criteria more. IOW, lipsync Steve Ballmer composited onto a nice dance video with some lens flares that are on beats with outstanding capture and sound quality. That is an automatic win according to these criteria, and I am bound by them. Unless someone does something flashier, of course.

the problem with that, is you get introduced to new effects and such that were 10s at one time but later seep to 8, 7, 5...Otohiko wrote:I have (or had, rather) a simple system for ops - if nothing bothers me about a particular aspect of the video, it gets a 10 in that. To me, that has no relevance. Time is relative. Videos don't change over time. Another video's effects have no bearing on the quality of One.Knowname wrote:the problem with that, is you get introduced to new effects and such that were 10s at one time but later seep to 8, 7, 5...Otohiko wrote:I have (or had, rather) a simple system for ops - if nothing bothers me about a particular aspect of the video, it gets a 10 in that. The key to my judging videos, if I'm indeed judging, is looking at them impartially and as an autonomous audiovisual/conceptual whole. Comparison to others is the mark of a fool
Everything is relative to the video's purpose. A 10 video made 10 years ago is still 10. Because it's relative to its' own wholeness, and another video's wholeness has no effect on the fact of the video's being as it is.
