Ops are left by people who liked the video enough to go out of their way to comment. Stars are left by everyone, even the person who downloaded the video and hated it so much they're wishing personal harm on you. Not suprising one is lower than the other.

There's also the factor that a lot of people tend to give out 2's or 3's to a video that they downloaded but haven't seen yet. You can blame the 10 unrated video download limit for that one, at least for the numberous times I've personally done it.

my vid on the top 10% currently holds a 3.86 (after 741 stars...)
it was at a 3.95 for a long time, but then it started dropping....

*sometimes* people just give out random ratings to clear their star ratings... so I figure if its above 3.0 its doing ok...

for the most part I dont pay that much attention to star ratings, espcially when theres only 20-30 stars... I start paying more attention around 100, cause its interesting to see where it goes from there. (but this has been said..)

I tend to give 1s only to vids that pissed me off, blatantly stole footage, or just really suck... even then sometimes they get 2s from me... but they only get 5s if there was something i really liked about it... i figure most people do about the same :D

i'm sure most ppl just give vids 1's to clear them off the list.. simply cause one is at the top of the list. pretty rude, but ppl will have to do either that or relle think about the vid to rate it, or i dunno.. get multiple accounts to increase number of vids they can download n not rate.. i no i alwways have problems wit downlaodin vids cause the vids i want to leave opinions for i don't star so that i dun forget about them... but i wuldnt rate them without watchin them tho

my relle bad vid has like a 3.63 rating afta over 700 stars.. no clue why, its RELLE bad.. but one of my best vids, well i consider it one of my best vids (the third link in prof lol) has a 3.30 or something, and i cant figure out why.. also the ops r all pretty nice. i think ppl dun like the concept.. yasha/chii romance.. but watever.. *shrugs* i'm too generous with my star ratings, i almost never give out ones.. more lately cause i've found some pretty crappy vids lately but most of my ratings r 3-4 usually.. vids with subtitles generally get a 3 from me too.. im too nice i dunno.. my ratings i somtimes just take off a point for subs, a point for quality... the rest i leave up to the vid.. sometimes if i liked it despite subs and quality, tho that's relle rare, i'll take off only one point for both of them.. really depends on the vid. but even if i dun personally like a vid, i dun rate it low for that. ppl have different interests n opinions, so i dun think thats a fair reason to rate the vid low.. like.. i dun like this song or i dun like this anime or something like that.. so i rate it by how well its made

I rate videos depending on how I like them. I give out a lot of 5's, actually, because most of the ones I download I'm bound to like. However, after reading this thread I'm probably going to adopt some of those philosophies (most likely yours, Arigatomina) and adjust my stars. I can think of right off the bat the ones I watch the most, they are so enjoyable. ^^ I do admit that in the past I have just given a video a three rating because I wasn't able to view the video. That was until I got the problem solved, so now I need to adjust some stars. I also have only given one opinion, that's because I was so excited and amazed after viewing the video that I just had to say something. I also need to go back and give the 5 vids opinions after I've adjusted my stars. *sigh* So much to do...
Working on my first AMV! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, I just got a huge ego boost from that.

Since they're collected in groups of 100, the page numbers at the bottom can be used as a quick-and-dirty guide to percentile scores.

Select All-time Star Scale List and click on "Stars" to order the list by raw star counts. Note the highest numbered page at the bottom; currently it's 319.

The top 1% score will be on page 3 or 4 (= 319 * 1%).
The top 10% score will be on page 32 or 33 (= 319 * 10%).
The median score will be on page 160 (= 319 * 50%).

Today a video needs a little over 4.0 to be in the top 1%, over 3.8 for the top 10%, 3.44 to be "average", and less than 2.4 to be in the bottom 1%.

I judge my star ratings with two aspects. Technical and "how I like it". Simply put it's like this to me:
1 = suffered while watching
2 = Technically bad, didn't like it either
3 = average in both aspects.. not bad but nothing special
4 = Technically awesome, but not interesting to me
or
I really liked it, but was problems tech-wise
5 = Both aspects were ^.^b

..also having subtitles in it is automatically -1 star. IIRC so far no subtitled AMV has gotten a 4 from me.
Maybe this makes some sense to my star distribution charts :3

But are you really sure? You can't even imagine the number of amvs which have subtitles in and you don't see them :?

I'm kind of odd when it comes to star ratings. I'm one of the lucky few who have to spend more time watching a video than downloading it (so no annoyance factor), but I tend to rate harshly because I know I'm kind of lenient. Also, I'm only just getting a feel for what separates the threes from the fours and the fours from the fives.

5: Great concept, well executed, perfect mood matching, makes me think about things in the anime (or whatever) I hadn't thought of before. Minimal possible use of effects. High-quality high-resolution footage is nice, but not necessarily required.

4: Good story/ adherence to the song, appropriate effects. Something I enjoy re-watching, but doesn't set my world alight. Good beat matching, good lip-synch, high quality... all those technical things that round off an excellent video or make or break a lesser one.

3: A good average. Closer in spirit to a four than a three. Some scenes feeling like pure filler, poorer synching and scene choice than a four, but otherwise a pretty arbitary divide. If I can see what the creator was trying to do, then it's almost guaranteed a three.

2: Kind of boring, but not horrible. Covers: random-clip videos that look good and pay lip service to the song's lyrics or instrumentals; sound concepts buried under a mountain of poor execution; and vids that are technically sound but dull as dishwater.

1: The best part of this video dribbled out of its computer's hard drive.

Minus one point for visible subtitles and/or logos, and for distracting ratio switches. If you've time to edit, you've time to prepare your footage.

As others have said, star ratings are only really useful once you've got enough to balance out the various ways in which people score videos, and to outweigh the random star ratings given to free up some list space.

5 - Very Good
4 - Good
3 - Average
2 - Poor
1 - Very Poor

Why so much discussion over so simple a concept.
