I wouldn't go that far. I've been making vids because I can for almost 2 years, and I don't feel buried, or even stifled. If anything, I feel encouraged. ^_^OmniStrata wrote:If you're making vids cause "you can". Then well, expect to be BURIED by the other vid makers here.
The questions of good/bad ideas:
1: Using songs that haven't been used here at the .org
Dangerous idea, possibly successful.
If no one's used it, there probably aren't many (or any) people who like it. Use it and you'll get that originality mark, but that doesn't mean you'll get many (or any) viewers. On the other hand, if you stumble onto the next popular song first, you may find yourself at the head of a wave of tomorrow's "Most used song" - which is a good thing for at least a year (till it's considered overused and people score you low because those after you had the same idea).
2. [Instead of] Making more AMVs to Linkin Park's "In The End" and Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life" (This site has hundreds of them), Doing something that hasn't been done.
Safe idea, no public drawbacks.
You may suffer from giving up ideas that would have pleased you personally, and pleased fans of the 'overused' genre. You may be eliminating an idea that would have produced a great video - a rare thing since there are few great vids to be found amid the 'overused' collections. But you won't get any flames, or any over-anxious fanboy attacks. It's safe on a public level - no risk, no loss.
3. [Not] Making more DBZ AMVs (Not to dis DBZ, but this site has over 7,500 and counting
Same as #2. Safe idea, but with more loss and less gain.
Naruto, Evangelion, Rurouni Kenshin, Sailormoon, YYH, Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop, to name a few - you won't be able to use any of these "overused anime." If you outlaw anime that have a number of vids (7,500 in this case) on the org, then you're severely limiting yourself. You can turn to rare anime and remain safe and original, but who's going to watch a video to 'I'll CKBC'? Sure, no one's done it before, but so what? Make one, originality to the max, and no viewers. There's a reason some anime have fewer vids - because fewer people know/like those anime. You can make a nitch using under-used anime, and you'll be safe, but if you want viewers, you'll be lonely. There are a lot of dbz vids because a lot of people know and like dbz. If you're invested in making people happy, you want to give them what they like. Try it and you'll see. If you're not a superb editor, you can use a "never before used" anime and you won't get nearly the praise you would if you used Naruto (which is fast catching up to dbz's stats on the org).
