If I'm still watching the video four months after making it, then it's a success to me
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

Then I failed miserably. :P

When I get many comments such as "OMG! You're awsm! I love this video!" then I consider the video a sucess. To be honest, everything I ever published (even my old dbz stuff) I personally considered pretty good and expected it to get a lot of good feedback. One more thing, I'd never publish something that I think sucks or even just bad. People who know that and still decide to publish despite their own dislike are.... idiots.

How do you judge success?
With a robe, a gavel, and one of those cool powdered whigs. Ha, ha just kidding. Well about everything except about the whig thing. 8-)

Actually for me success is a combination of two things: personal satisfaction and viewer response. Number of downloads doesn't really enter into it for me. I do like alot of downloads, especially on videos that have been highly rated.

My video's are hardly downloaded and don't get the star ratings to make them stand out I am really happy with them though, so I hardly see either of these as a standard for succes.

To me a video is a succes if I like it and I here at least 1 person I don't know personally say they like it ... of course awards and download and shit make you feel better but I don't really think you can measure the succes of your video by them.

I try not too.

Why bother?
If I did well a few people contact me on aim, pat me on the back and go "good job"... Thats all I need, if I think it turned out ok, and a few others think it turned out ok, then i'm set.

If I worried about the top 10%, Hits, or getting *supa koop powars!* (Patent pending). I'd drive myself crazy.

Although if we're judging success by mere scores alone. I'd do this in a loud booming voice.

Opinions top 10% - Category - Originality
1 Voices_Of_Ryan (Jacob Ryan) Hallucinations of the Harmonic Mind 10.00 11
1 Voices_Of_Ryan (Jacob Ryan) "Deep Blue" 10.00 10

I must admit, in some way I am very proud for having 2 spots on the orig top 10... Because for some reason when I first started out I never could really find ideas to call my own, and now it seems as if... Even though I might be the best editor in the world... I finally found something to call my own and be proud of. An Idea.

I guess you could judge sucess on alot of levels, but all that counts in the end is that you feel like you did something that might have made other people feel emotions.

Atleast for me.

Satisfaction is all personal. For me there is no greater thrill them when someone comes up and says "your video scared the bejebus out of me!! " or my personal favorite "I won't be able to sleep for weeks!"

For me, it's a few factors. First would be my personal satisfaction with the video. In actuality, I'm my own harshest critic, so when I can enjoy my video without nitpicking too much, that's a good sign. Also, the opinion of my friends both locally and on the .org matters a good deal to me, especially those whose work I admire. Conventions are another great way to see how people react to a certain video, since it's usually pretty easy to gauge their opinions from their overall response. And the last major factor I look at would be the star scale, since it tends to give a pretty good sampling of the viewers' opinions of the video.
So I really don't base a video's success off any one thing, but rather a combination of the above.

Hmm, interesting question.

I think releasing a video is enough evidence to warrant success, for me; all of my videos have different goals, of course. But generally, these goals are creative and personal, and aren't measured by downloads, ratings, contest wins or any kind of popular factors. I don't think saying that I "produced a 5th personal visualization for one of the most influential music pieces in my life" or that I "represented an utterly disregarded great music artist in the .org database" means very much to others, and it shouldn't - it's the video that should matter to them, and whether they like what they see/hear, or not.

Popular measures of success are an object of curiosity for me, of course, and I greatly appreciate any feedback, but it's unlikely to have bearing on how much of a success I consider a video to be. Because, like I said, by then all actual goals I had in mind were already accomplished by the time the first (non-beta) viewer even downloaded the video.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
