The intro to Damage and all of Only Time Will Tell are kind of what I was getting at.
I'm checking out the other mentioned videos, but it's going to take me a little to get to them, as I'm bogged down with other crap.
On a side note, I kept thinking "Only Time Will Tell" was actually called "Till the End of Time." Damn you, Star Ocean.

Well, but that sort of proves my point with the neccesity of some temporal music sync (it doesn't have to be beat sync), even if it's not at the forefront. I was actually very careful to get the all the chords/notes to correspond to visuals timing-wise in the intro to Damage, for instance (which made it hellishly hard to edit).
But I guess I see what you're getting at with the 'ambient video' idea though. It's sort of like a video where mood and setting take precedence over the story/character. Sort of like whereas normal videos are generally a story in context, ambient video is almost pure, open-to-interpretation, context.
And that's where my obsessive idea of the 'landscape video' leading so far, except I'm not sure how I can do it right.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I think its a cool idea. but you'll have to aproach it pretty much like most people are saying here. Try to synch the mood, transitions, and onscreen actions to the music, weather it be chimes, long notes, or whatever. Usually in these kinds of videos, the wrong scene can also screw up the mood/flow aswell. you have to be carefull on both levels.
In my yet to be released Animasia segment, I did something like this, but to instrumental music rather than ambient. same techniques I feel would be applied though in both cases.
Heres a short one thats a pretty good example of what I mean:

he synchs the kodomas actions to the music, aswell as the mood of the peice fits the kodomas aswell. It can be taken to an even higher level, but its still a good example.

I conceived my Mononoke vid specifically as a landscape AMV and that's what drove the choice of anime: Mononoke has the best landscape footage of any anime I've ever seen. In the end I allowed a few scenes with characters, but only a few.Otohiko wrote:...My own 'ambient' obsession is to make a pure 'landscape' AMV one day, but so far it just hasn't worked. I started on one recently, and had to drop it because it needed more than just ambience, and wasn't going anywhere... but, one day, one day...
You might consider using live action video for something like this. Landscape footage is available at a (usually high) price, but royalty free. I've had ideas for both urban and not-urban landscape vids that I'd like to try some day.
BTW, thanks for the link. That's a nice AMV. I see that he used some of the same scenes that I did (unavoidable), including the ones with stuttering pans. They don't look so bad here, but they were the reason I put mine back "in the can".
