well, we musnt forget about the best size in the world... i mean i've used it in The absolute best video of all time... i would HIGHLY recommend exporting from premiere at 150x100 then resizing to 320x240 for the org... and it will be like taking the cels from the animators... perfect quality!!

Why do people upload a 4:3 video to the org at a resolution of 720x480? I can understand for conventions where it has to be compliant with the equipment... but an online distro version...?
easy answer there.
720x480 means making no changes whatsoever to the sizes, ratios or whatnot. Less work, and less messing with the video on the whole.
I think the thing that confuses me the most is that people have already spent many hours making their videos that adding a simple bicubicresize(640,480) to their post-processing script would be relatively quick and painless. I can understand if they just don't know any better though.

Sure it would be easy, but it's not intuitive. All the ripping programs out there rip your footage to 720x480, so logically you would assume that that would be the right size right?

I used to use 640x480, but I had trouble keeping the quality up without the file size getting ridiculous. Now I use 320x240 - gets a little bad with the pixelation for some anime, but I don't have to reduce the bitrate to keep the file size from soaring when I use mpg for distribution.

WRONG. Have you read the guides? Specifically the parts about aspect ratios...

Yes I have, I like them. They are well written and I use them as a reference frequently.

Look, if you rip the dvd, run dvd2avi, convert in virtualdub, all simple processes, none of them requre you to even pay attention to the aspect ratio. You can go the entire process of editing without dealing with it, hell Premiere even has the default size of 720x480 as a primary option.

So, sure the guides talk about it a lot (enough anyway for anyone who take the time to read them to get it), and the information is all there, but what I'm saying is that it's not intuitive to automatically assume that the size that comes off your disk is wrong.

well to clarify, If i understand it correctly, 720x480 is technically wrong for a PC screen pixel for pixel for both 4:3 and 16:9, the reason it is in this resolution is because TVs don't use square pixels like monitors do. Hence, 720x480 would show wrong if you encoded the footage to AVI with no aspect ratio setting. Not a problem with Mpeg, since you can specify an aspect ratio for players to automatically resize it to. Hence you would have to use something like 702x480 for 4:3 and 720X420 for 16:9 (not sure these are exact, i'm just guestamating. to lazy to do the actual math right now.) anyway you want them to be 1:1 for a PC monitor.
