Also, if you want to get to making AMVs with the fewest disc purchases, go for movies or short OAVs. Lame tip, but it works.
Not lame at all.
There's plenty of good anime out there that fits on 1-3 discs, isn't horribly overpriced, and is worthwhile to own in any case.
One disc:
Gunsmith Cats
All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
Armitage III OVA
*A shopping bag's worth of movies, like the Ghibli/Disney stuff.
Two discs:
Macross Plus
3x3 Eyes (one dual disc case)
Oh! My Goddess! OVAs
Three discs:
Key the Metal Idol
Sabe Marionette J
Battle Athletes
This is just an example of what can be done, and for a reasonable amount of money.
Not to take Koopiskeva's talents lightly, but the guy made the current #1 video on this site (by opinion score) with Majix Music Maker, a program that you can easily buy for less than $50 US. That, plus a bunch of freeware you can find out about here, a serious investment of time spent learning how to do stuff on your part, and at least a *little* talent, and you can make a very credible video.
Even Windows Movie Maker is a viable way to start, and that's free, if you have a qualifying OS. (iMovie, if you have a Mac.)
You may also notice a lot of videogame MVs around, which may be an alternative if you already have games like Xenosaga, or FF X.
So, it can be done, for the price of a couple first-release games, and some hard work.
Just sayin'...
