I've seen some pretty complicated credit clips, but I like simple screenshot coverpics. Just something with the title (which I *do* think is important unless it's just the name of the song or something - helps distinguish the vid from others that might combine the same anime & song), the song and artist, the anime, and the editor. I tend not to worry much about putting my name on things, but I do like to leave an end bumper with email & website addresses, just for standard contact information. I agree with SarahtheBoring - once it's on the internet bumpers are the only thing telling who it belongs to. And it makes it easier to track down more of that person's work, or to avoid it in the future.

I've decided to STOP all use of my original bumpers.

Bumpers are a difficult situation. Some are good, some out and out suck, and others are just down right appropriate. It depends on the artist. Very few have I seen which I just wouldn't skip to get to the action. It has to be something special or entertaining. It can be pulled of very well if you customize it per video. Not a whole lot, just make it pertain to the AMV is question. Still frames, CG, and musicals are good, but can and will get boring after so long. The key is variety.
In my situation bumpers are imperative. My bumper not only defines the video as mine, but it’s an example of the "where?" and "How?" my name was acquired. Despite that I am still picky as to which videos receive the honor. For the most part I will neglect bumpers or title screens if I have included an “Easter Egg.” Also I have recently deiced that my bumper is inappropriate, and even anti-effective on some of my more serious videos or when used in excess. For this reason, in remastering, it's becoming more difficult to include.

I'm with MAS on this one, I made my outro just for fun (and did have fun making it). A little animation and some stupid music
Vids just need a little something to help identify what anime was used, what song was used, and who edited it. Doesn't matter if it's flashy, plain, or cool, just so long as it's there.

I have a lot of fun making bumpers- it's a chance for me to dabble a bit in a slightly different style of editing- but I don't worry too much when watching a video whether it has one or not. If it's cool looking, I'll remember it, but I don't hold it against a video if it doesn't have one.

I'd like to think that bumpers are supposed to be representative of you as a person and give an overall feel of your work. Our bumper (Nightowl Pictures, the shots of the owl zooming out to the logo) looks clean, professional, and compliments our AMVs by showing that we take our projects seriously. Other bumpers that have funny samples or really wacky text work too for a person who does AMVs just for the sake of having fun.
They work well at cons that accept them because people who know the bumper know the guy, and by knowing him know what his videos are like, and so it prepares them for what is coming next. I can see why they are excluded at contests for unfair advantage, though. That makes sense to me.
I'm pro-bumper... well, pro-GOOD-bumper... then again this is my graphic design "EVERYTHING MUST BE WITH A PURPOSE" training so I dunno.

Well, the bumpers really arent all that important, but if they are well done they can add a great deal to a vid, and give it an overall more professional look. I just placed a new studio bumper I made in after effects on my new vid, and i have gotten lots of positive comments. People told me that the Studio logo/intro and the end credits i did made my video look professional, or more professional, can't remember what they said exactly. Although these aren't too important, i personally would always like to atleast see an end credits with the basic video info(creators name, song/artist name, and anime name).
Plus depending on yr bumpers they can help set the mood for your video before it even really starts. A well made bumper is always nice to see.
If you have any real inclanation to see the bumper i am talking about, go to my profile(it's the vid named Shut Her Down, don't have to watch the vid, but check out my studio intro at the beginning and my end credits).
i even went all the way to making my own music for my studio bumper.
