well I guess it depends on the Frankenstein then... if you are using only one clip from someone else's video then it doesn't matter. If you are using edits from another person's video than thats reason for the amv community to go nuts on you. However if you take edits from the actual anime, then you are doing the same thing..

I think the only time I've taken issue with it is when someone takes someone else's WHOLE amv and puts it to a different song... even then I'd rather just point it out to the original editor and let them handle it.

Also sometimes you run into this with people who really truly "don't know better" so you might be doing more damage by going off on someone, than fixing it. In that case: educate educate educate.

We may have an "honor amongst thieves system" but we are still "thieves".

I'm going a little offtopic now but imo that's many times the case. It always felt kinda weird to me if someone commented on one of my videos, saying that it's "emotional" or whatever. It feels like I can't take all the credit for that since what I merely did was to bring two emotional elements together in a way that they match. That is not to say editing means nothing but that we're not all that responsible for the awesomeness of our videos. It's called remix culture for a reason: we're most often not the original creators.

To paraphrase Picard talking to Data regarding his violin playing - you chose the original artists, the works, and how to blend them together. That is your contribution.

I'd say it depends on the intent. And, yes, before we go down that tangent, intent can be pretty well ascertained - especially when constrained to "trying to do something like Kit did" and "everything else." There's an inherent difference, and it's not in the technical details.

I had someone take my Toradora AMV, move the clips around to another song, then try to "video response" my AMV on youtube. I was rather amused...

You know things are bad when I'm on the positive side of the benchmark.

You know things are bad when you think Kit knows what he's saying.

I'd say this problem is only a problem if someone actually wants it to be a problem. For example:

Every single one of my AMVs contains at least one clip from another AMV.

Nobody has ever picked up on it until now. It has never been a problem. And I suspect it never will, unless someone wants to make a problem out of it.

(If you'd like to find those clips, have fun.)

It would also depend on how noticeable you want to make it...
