I have had some firsthand experience with this question, since I did just that. I contacted him, asked him if I could rework the low points in his vid, straighten up some visual issues, fill in the black space of nothingness that he had in his vid, resync some movements and finally try to better represent the idea he had come up with in the first place. All issues that I had written out as an opinion on his vid prior to the e-mail I sent him. He agreed, and was very enthusiastic about me remaking his vid, so I did.SpaceGhost2K wrote: what if I contacted the guy, asked him if he thought of this or this, then volunteered to work with him to remake the video?
After about a few weeks I sent it to him and he was very greatly pleased with the result. In fact he asked me to submit it somewhere so I did (Acen2004) and shortly after I put it up as collaboration on the Org.
Not long after this he put up a different vid which I gave him another opinion on. About a month later he remade it himself as a V.2.. I was a bit surprised at this but it was cool. Kinda defeats the purpose of not loading up a beta vid.. but then again maybe this .org needs a beta bed come to think of it. Where editors op other editors that need help but don't wish to keep their vids online for all time... but thats off topic.
Anyway, in my experiance with this it actually helped the person, not hinder them, in the long run. I essentially just took a badly edited video and remade it, but by sticking to his idea and (mostly) scene selections I made someone happy. Later, he repostedthe vid I reworked for him even tho the collaboration vid was already up. Not sure why he did this, guess he forgot it was already up, I should probably recontact him about it...
As to my feelings about the whole thing, I still feel a bit uncomfortable talking about this subject, but it is what it is. Even tho he was satisfied by the end product I can't help but think I would have felt better about this if we had both been in one room collaborating about the video itself instead of through e-mail.
So what did I learn from this, not much.. wait. I think I learned that by contacting a person and staying true to their original idea is a good way to go about this. The only other people that I would find to have a problem with this are the people that are not involved with the AMV at hand (i.e. other .org members). Most likely what will happen tho is nobody will care, at least I haven't heard anything bad and I've talked about this before.
I've put myself in shame for this for two years people, where are the pitchforks, the scathing letters of disapproval, argh the suspense is killing me. *holds head in hands like that guy in the pic below* yeargh
