I edited my first videos on Win 98. But the programs I used were VidEdit and Pinnacle Studio.... The first of which is ancient, linear, and contains no special effects nor save function other than saving a file (it caused tons of headaches, but it sure gave me a crash course and made me appreciate Premiere far more than some) and Studio is really intended for home-movie editing and is highly prone to crashing. Not really all that much more powerful than VidEdit, either, with the exception of importing and porting to tape. Oh yeah... and Studio cost money. VidEdit was on my comp to start with, for some reason.
