I don't claim the anime footage is my own. The theif does claim the stollen edits are his own.
Now it would be hard to do that now would it?

I only see a major reason to get mad over it is if only they don't give you any credit for the source footage.
They never give any credit, they do steal effects, transitions, and edits. So, like you said, that's major reason to get mad over it.
Who's they? I've known people to give credit, and if they don't I already stated my feeling on them.

I credit the owner of the footage, and any original edits I take from the anime. I believe it's fair use if you credit the owner. They don't credit the owner of the stolen edits. Apple orange, two different usages.
Ummmm.... yes.

I'm sorry to hear you enjoy the canibalized mixes made by people cutting my videos up and bragging on how they did all the work. A big fan, eh? Yeah, it's great that they do nothing, let's pat them on the back. Whoot! What fun to watch these frankenvids. But you know...if we give credit to the thieves, why should anyone make their own videos? Let's all just mix up the videos other people have done and slap our names on them. How's that for art? Works for movie producers. It's all about using someone else's concept because you can't think of anything new of your own to make.
Did I say I'm a fan of people who claim your own work??? EH!!! When I say I'm a fan of remixes, I'm talking about when people make a remix and specifically explain it to be a remix. And the reason I said remix is because I love remixes to songs, and I've seen remixes to AMV's that I thought to be bad ass, it's just fed up if the creator doesn't give credit to the original editor.

Patting on the back?? WTF!!!? Your really making mountains out of mole hills. I guess musical artists should be outraged at all those people making remixes of there songs!!! >:O I know some DJ's who like to hear about other people making remixes of there songs. Actually they seem to get pretty Freekin' flattered.

Well if they put up a direct link, would you still get all butt hurt???

Oh and I never said I support people who try to take credit for your own work. And if a huge percentage of someones video is your work, I find that offensive and that person as a very lazy editor. I don't think there should be any more rants at me, I'm just stating my opinion as you are yours. Yes copying someone elses AMV is unoriginal, but so is remixing someone elses song! ;P

It's the "why do you guys keep complaining and getting mad about this?" that made me respond the way I did. We get mad because they aren't doing remixes the way you see them - as a compliment to the original, fully crediting the original (the way dj artists do when they use someone's song - they credit the original). These thieves don't give credit, they take it and claim it's entirely their own. They even deny that they used other people's videos to make theirs. That's why we get mad, and why we keep complaining.

Oh well that is something I prefer to forget -.- At the time I also didn't have Tsumibito no kashou on my pc, that was a some seconds fma clip a friend passed to me, but even if I didn't know from what it was, I'm been an idiot using it -.- Poor me -.- Luckly I won some maturity since then.

Oh and I forgot that after had discovered that now I properly changed my video comments =)

Now let's see >.<

Who's they? I've known people to give credit, and if they don't I already stated my feeling on them
But there are anyway people who Don't give any credit, using others footage as of them. Generally, I think that is wrong to use others footage because of what Arigatomina wrote, it is your own ART, and like he wrote:
"But you know...if we give credit to the thieves, why should anyone make their own videos? Let's all just mix up the videos other people have done and slap our names on them. How's that for art?"

I understand if is a remix done especially and born for be a Remix. But I don't accept anything of the rest! (even if I didn't saw any remix! )
I guess musical artists should be outraged at all those people making remixes of there songs!!!
Actually, they are =P
Yes copying someone elses AMV is unoriginal
Stel a concept, it is unoriginal, stel an amv, it is a crime and it is against any rule, it's unfair and useless.

If they don't give credit, then fuck them.. I'm not supporting that at all. Don't get me wrong Arigatomina, I feel a lot the same way as you about those people. I was just saying if someone took a 5 second clip and put it in there video, I don't see a reason to get uncalm, even if they did a remix and gave credit to the original editor. I agree with banning people who would not give credit to the original creator.

Also Michele, DJs looooove remixes to there songs, many get very VERY Flattered that people took notice to there songs. The people who really get made about people remixing there music, is people who care about money, if they think the remix is making them loose money, witch a lot of times isn't the case and remixes many times make the original one more well known..... man I love people taking things the wrong way. :|

Yeah, I wouldn't get upset about a scene or two, either. I used to have a certain YYH clip that I had...first dibs on at one time, and it popped up all over the place after I used it, all taken from the same vid. It was a 'clean' clip, only the strange aspect ratio gave away the source, so no one but me would recognize where it came from. I was tickled about it, sort of like "Heh...he spotted the gem in my crappy little vid..." 8-)

i think it depends on what has been stolen, as many have said, if edits and effects are stolen and claimed to be their own thats one thing, if just footage was stolen and nothing more, thats another..

i have had one of each case, in one case i didnt care mostly cause they didnt steal any edits, and they gave me credit, so i wouldnt be mad (heck i wasnt worried about credit, just the 4 she gave me on lipsync... lol) also they changed the placements and made their own edits, I only was able to recognize my work due to one of my own lazy mistakes (that happened to be on beat with the music) and i could easily point it out (thankyou sailor moon transformations, also SM footage is deffinately hard to come by)

in the other case i was ticked cause they "blamed" an effect i made on their cousin, stating that they didnt intend it to be that way that their cousin was messing with the computer during render (which could have never produced those results)... and i came and commented to them that they shouldnt steal clips, and that they shouldnt try to blame effects on someone who never had anything to do with the clip. (though i noticed in one of their later clips that they had done a "special effects" video but all the effects were ripped off of someone else)

I find it doubled edged sword, where in one case youre getting ripped off, and that doesnt feel good, in the other your footage is GOOD enough for someone to want to rip off lol

either way the coppiewrite argument is pretty valid cause technically we are all ripping off the anime companies... lol...

AMV "Thiefs"

Post by Heiwahugia » Wed May 25, 2005 9:52 am

Ok every body i have a confession to make. the only way i can make amvs are to "steal" clips and i think theres nothing wrong with it. as long as you dont steal a complete amv and claim it as your own then i dont understand why everyone is persecuting people with limited resources. I have dial up and the only thing i can use to make the amvs is through windows movie maker. If i had a faster internet connection id download the entire series of an anime. But alas the case is not so. i think you should just let it go. if even 25% if the amv is notably your clips then it should be deleted. But in my case i use so many different clips from different amv and i hack them up so bad that most people wouldnt even recognize there own work. Trust me. Besides, You cant steal what you dont own and stuff.

well you see the thing i get annoied with is when i go to look up say Pretear vids, and i see about 10 amvs total, and atleast three are using the same exact edits and effects, that kinda puts a damper on someones hard work, cause one of those three is the original video... and that makes me discouraged in wanting to look up amvs to watch cause essentially i am going to see the same amv over and over...

now if you create something out of other amvs without taking effects and edits then i dont have a problem with it, granted your visual quality is going to look like crap because the video has been rendered and re-rendered a few times, and WMM tends to destroy video quality, but thats up to you....

some of us understand that there is limited footage out there, and can sympathize (thats why i wasnt mad at the person who took Sailor Moon Footage from me, she edited it and changed the placement in the song and didnt take any of my effects, the only way i could tell it was originally my footage was cause of an editing mistake on my part)

but the thing that irritates me most about stolen footage is the bazillions of logos you see in one AMV, not [adult swim] or WB but logos but that of other AMV creators... cause it just says "i ripped this off" really loud and clear....

now if you can make an AMV and noone can tell its "stolen footage" then awesome! good for you! and congrats! or whatever... then i dont have a problem with that, but when its OVBIOUS that its stolen then thats where things get quite a bit annoying.

The preferred method is to rip your own footage. Just go to your local Blockbuster or sign up for Netflix if you're strapped for cash. There is a problem with stealing other creators' footage, as has been said before; some use such subtle effects that most people wouldn't notice. Even if you think you're stealing a section without edits, that may not be the case. Take Memories of Love and Conflict for example - there are exactly those type of seamless effects present. In this day and age, with anime so widely available, there is simply no reason to rip off other creators.
