Forced Labor

Post by The Non-Professional » Wed Feb 25, 2004 3:24 am

I know many people slave over their AMVs to finsih them get an effect right or timming right what have you, but is it right to really force yourself to make an amv? I mean lets say you have an idea and its pretty original, no one else has done it and you would love to see it done. You yourself have thw knowhow and footage to make the video, thing is, you dont want to make the video. Sure youd love to but you honestly just dont feel it in you to sit on your ass and edit for jack squat. Anyone understand where im coming from? Is it right to just produce an AMV into which you put nothing into (if you actually even made it) I guess you can say its up to the creator right?

I guess if they're stupid enough to make a video they don't want to, but feel obliged to somehow. Then they deserve everything they get (whatever that might be)

I force myself to sit down and edit because I know I'll enjoy it and that the finished product will be well worth it. It's hard, though, when there are so many ways to mindlessly waste time right at my fingertips.

This is a problem I have with any long-term project, not just AMVs, and it's not a good thing.

When I want to edit and do, I enjoy it, and when I stop enjoying the editing I stop working on the video. Then, as weeks turn into months I force myself through whatever rut I'm in to get past the spot I don't like, and hopefully get the ball rolling again.

And then I format my harddrive again and loose the progress I made on the 5 AMV's I was working on. (just last weeks as a matter of fact.)

GOOD TIMES!

I sometimes have to force myself to edit. The editing process itself usually isn't so fun. Its when I've completed an edit, I look at it in awe, feel like im on top of the world for 5 minutes, then move on. The accomplishment, not the process, is what drives me.

Depends. Some ideas deserve loving attention and some don't. I spent 6 months on a couple of my videos because they were effect videos that I wanted to get everything right on (although I never did on the first one) while other videos have been done in an evening or two because I thought it was the idea that would carry the video rather than attention to every detail type of effort. The end result shows the difference though, I like my badger video or the kiki trailer I just uploaded but I think it's obvious I spent less time on either of them than I did figuring out a single effect on my Ghibli dance video.

OTOH, the reason I spent six months on the Ghibli thing was that I was learning how to do effects with it. Roughly 3/4 of my work did not end up in the video because it just didn't work. Now that I know the basics of what I'm doing I don't waste as much time doing it. The trailer that I did during breaks while I was moving used transparencies, overlays, fading, changing clip speed, etc and it would have taken me at least a month to get it done before. Because I've gotten better what I do just screwing off is better than my first few videos that I spent lots of time and effort on.

well.. i dont force myself. i just like making AMVs for people to watch and appreciate. thats why if you noticed from my first two AMVs that it said that they were dedicated to someone... i like the good reaction of people on it... its kinda like an ego builder for me to make more. so now in my 3rd video which isnt dedicated to anyone special --except WHR fans-- coz i had enough self confident to enjoy what im doing. then in my 4th AMV --which im not working on yet-- im gonna need someone to dedicate it to... you guys see what im saying?... if there is no people enjoying my AMVs, i wouldnt enjoy making them.
