But 16:9 is capable of HD. :3
Which doesn't mean as much in the context of AMVs, but meh.

I love watching HD promos on my SD sets. It's entertaining to watch them promote an increase in quality that my hardware is incapable of.

Just zoom and crop in the video editing programm till it looks right

Depends on the range of ARs used. If one source is 4:3 while another is at 2.39:1, I'm definitely going to have to crop the 4:3 down, if just a little. Then, if the video quality allows, I'd zoom in a skosh on the 2.39:1. Doing that gives me a good moderation between the two varying resolutions.

However if the range isn't all that bad, like 4:3 and 3:2 or even 16:9, then I just leave them to their correct dimensions.

I'm doing a vid right now using mixed footage (Utena TV & Utena movie).

* I resize all the 4:3 clips to be the same width as the 16:9, but the same AR, so they are taller than the 16:9.

* I edit at the 16:9 resolution, so Premiere crops the 4:3 clips at the top and bottom.

* I move the 4:3 clips up or down (using the Motion effect in Premiere) if I want a different part of the frame to be visible.

You could do this the other way around so you're editing at 4:3 and moving the 16:9 frames left and right, which is what they do when they (ugh) make the 4:3 DVD versions of 16:9 movies.

My video 'Choices' mixes animes with different aspect ratios. At times I would stretch the footage to fit, other times I didn't bother. The trick I found was the footage/scene your using. If your going from a very slow moving scene to another slow moving scene with a different aspect ratio it's not bad. Also if your going from scenes of similuar color/lighting levels. Going from a scene where it's WHITE to one where the scene is bright but with BLACK borders is jarring. But if you go from a dark scene to a scene with black borders it's not so noticable.
