Freestyle editing vs. consistent editing . . .

"Freestyle" as you call it, is what I prefer more. But even so, I try not to make my videos too random... As for watching other videos, I like seeing both, but storyline videos sometimes require much more attention in order to keep up with them.
But, in the end, I guess it all depends on mood I am in.

Freestyle does seem like a very vage term, I get a brilliant mental image of waking up in my chair, 3 empty bottles of JD to one side, a new AMV on my desktop and a blank spot in my memory.
As it seems here (freestyle meaning to edit clips together without thought to an overall story) isnt all that bad. I've read a good page worth on 'the story of this AMV' or 'the meaning behind it' and, apon download completion, been greeted by a truly half baked vid.
So Nyha!

You need to be able to make a video "flow", and that by default cannot be random. Even if your footage is random, your editing needs to have some sort of grounding to support the video.
I think people tend to forget the last line..
I prefer consistent editing, and sometimes "random videos" turn out to be rather consistent if the clips are focused enough or the flow is good.. I guess freestyle is more or less in the editing process. If you "start from a scratch", so to speak, it'd be freestyle editing. When you haven't pre-planned the video apart from choosing the song/anime combo.

I hate Magic Pad, but love From the ashes
It doesn't matter to me if the vid is random or has a storyline though, as long as the Editing is good and enjoyable The Vid is gewd enough to me.
For a Video with a story it is easier to build up emotions though and I always prefer emotion over randomness (I prefer fast videos better than slow ones though).
I think it really doesn't matter.

Consistency.
I'm a creature of habit and it's no surprise that I take it so far as to have the exact same sync patterns and transition lengths. I.e songs generally follow a verse/chorus structure and so I usually put transitions (of the same length) at the same portions in the verses and choruses as the previous verse/chorus.
This is not always the case, but it's not a surprise to see a time line with only one verse/chorus filled and yet all the transitions and cuts for subsequent verses have already been established.
Yeah I'm boring...
In all seriousness, I find it VERY difficult to edit 'randomly' and have tried multiple times with EPIC FAILURE.
