:? so?

I know most of that cause I've been there, just general knowlege. Most military people would know those minor details about japan cause they get stationed there.

I thought Otaku was restricted to anime/manga. But whatever, I'd want something to be proud of too if I was from Denver.

I see no such evidence that points to you being a house...thus:

You != Otaku

Anyone who gets that will know why it's funny and people calling themselves Otaku is even funnier.

Of course I know that! The slang derives from the stereotype that said Nerds, after afdjourning from School or Work, go right home so that they can participate in geektastic things.

Import Namespace nihongo
desc = nihongo.slang("otaku");
user = 'CN=""Areyo"" FN=""Wang Daniel""';
user[] << desc;

There! It's funny now! (images coming soon)

Yes and thus saying you're an otaku is actually a derogatory term in Japanese and I never got why US fans wore it like a badge when in fact they're insulting themselves. Call yourself an otaku in Japan and see the reaction you get.

More evidence that I am a <% nihongo.slang.otaku(); %> :

Carp streamers on Boy's Day, May 5th

Emperor's birthday makred on calendar (though not much in power). Day of first Tokyo olympics marked on calendar. Ryoma's birthday marked on calendar. National day of Japan (and Deutsche Unity Day and even Fete National du Francais) are marked on my calendar.

The only thing it DOESN'T have is the States July 4th holiday marked, because it's also a calendar that says Thanksgiving is in Octobre (hint hint).

My parents had better not find out I'm a Japan-o-phile, that's EVEN WORSE than...

I'd get questions from colleagues, asking "Oh. Were you born here?" and "Do you come from (country)?" and even worse "How long have you been here?". Well, since I'm the ONLY kid on the block that knows that:
French rail tickets say "SNCF RATP" and that
Japanese payphone punch holes in your magnetic card.
And that the vending machines use a infrared "radar" zone (akin to Mazan: Flash of the Blade) to detect movement, and if you stop in front of a Coke machine for 3 seconds (or touch it) the screen will automatically turn on.

i even know that Coke machines are likely placed in zones of relatively high traffic, and, just like in the States, almost everywhere. And that vending machines per capita is five to seven based on type, three on average. You can get movies, manga, tam***s, socks, beer, aspirin tablets, DVD-R, phonecards and more from them too.

I've seen a REAL pachinko machine, in real life. And I know what pachinko parlours look like!

GEEK

Consider - in my FIRST post, I explicitly said that I considered myself an otaku, in "all of the derogative senses of the word".

I know it's an insult, but who else has a copy of Kodansha's "Japan: Profile of a Nation", "Japan: The Illustrated Encyclopedia" and "Your Guide To The Japan Rail".

Anime is the least of it.
I've begun mixing foreign phrases into my speech, and explianing the speech semantics/linguistics to my colleagues.
I am infecting others with this.

ACTUAL QUOTE!!! BASED ON A REAL-LIFE EVENT!!!:
Colleague: So how big is your room?
Me: Which of them?
Colleague: The one you, like use for sleeping and stuff
Me: (mumbles: hai... roku, nein... ah...)
Me: anno... 5 ("five")... tatami? (I didn't know ordinal #s at the time)
Colleague: What? That's?
Me: How should (refers to self in third-party) explain this...

There there. The first step is admitting it. As for options... Well you can continue down this path and enjoy all the fangirls life throws at you, and all of the other perks that come with it. Or you can revert to a not-so-geeky lifestyle, working in a sterilisation clinic and ultimately boring yourself to sleep. The choice is yours.

As some friends of mine said last night. "Ouch! We just smacked into each others breasts. I'm dizzy."
