I had *something* the other day that was shutting my computer down repeatedly. I don't know what it was since I was half asleep at the time, and I only woke up when it turned itself back on each time. I did a system restore and installed some updates I'd downloaded - it was fine after that. I guess the patch was in that mess of updates (but I'd been having trouble fully installing my updates, so I kept pushing them off).
It really hurts when you don't know your computer or what's going on in the computer world.

I have cron run Windows Update automatically, but I was offline for about a few months (DSL card broken) and the instant I got on dialup it was clogged...trythil wrote:Of course, the really stupid part about all this is that the patch was released LAST MONTH, and tons of people still got infected...
I can install a stateful firewall, but I don't want to. Why? I need to allow non-established instance connections to any random port. Though I can selectively block and unblock ports, I still think it's stupid and pointless if they could just fix the security.
As soon as Blaster is over, temp firewalls go down and any joe random 123.45.67.89 can access any portport on the box... including Open Stupid Security Hole, or OpenSSH. Time to get 0wnz3d by some script kiddie, YES!

Then you have very bad server software.danielwang wrote: I can install a stateful firewall, but I don't want to. Why? I need to allow non-established instance connections to any random port. Security principle numero uno is the principle of least privilege. If you have software that needs to accept connections on any random port, you have bigger issues than firewalling.
For remote access over an insecure network, OpenSSH is far better than raw telnet, raw Windows Terminal Service, raw X, or whatever. I suggest you actually use it before blasting it.danielwang wrote:As soon as Blaster is over, temp firewalls go down and any joe random 123.45.67.89 can access any portport on the box... including Open Stupid Security Hole, or OpenSSH. Funny thng - when my compute suddenly shut down at 4:15 on thursday, I actually thought it was the worm. However, that was not the case....

That's still a distant dream...
