Unclear Site Banners

It felt great making those site banners, but they looked grainly pixelated. Since I used Roxio Digital Media Creator 10, I saved it as a JPEG. Instead, I couldn't see the colorful text; Plus, everything else looked almost like a mess. I'm thinking about downloading GIMP which some members suggested to get a better picture in GIF. When I look at it on the site, it doesn't look clear enough.

What might be the problem?

Text is big and the picture is big too, but the color looks messy a bit. I can still see some of the stuff though.
