if you get the original creator's permission, then it's not stealing

If the original creator can watch your vid and tell who you took the footage from, then it's considered stealing and will get your video removed. You might be surprised how well people can spot their videos when others use them. If you're spotted, the vid will be reported, deleted, and you may lose your uploading privileges.
So...yeah, probably safest not to go there. DVDs are a good way to get footage, definitely better quality than downloaded sources.
/check the 'Site Announcements' section and read the first sticky - the 'Forum Rules', it'll save you a lot of trouble. The FAQ at the top of the forum is another good bit to read through. ^.~

Nope. You're just copying bits.Heavengurl wrote:Is it considered stealing if i use a part of someones video but use a different song? im not using their whole video though. Help please!
Of course, the act of copying those bits will cause
- people to get mad at you for copying those bits
- the creator of the video from which you copied bits to create several dramatic forum threads about your cardinally sinful act
- your video to be removed from local hosting, if it is hosted locally
- you to be banned
but it's not stealing.
Unless you want to go into that intellectual property quagmire.

Well, I took footage for my first video. But I contacted the creators and I didn't use parts that looked like they had been edited by the creator. I think that's really the best way to do it, because then it's as if you took it from the DVDs but did a poor job ripping/encoding. Then when I was able to use my own footage, I redid those earlier parts.Heavengurl wrote:Is it considered stealing if i use a part of someones video but use a different song? im not using their whole video though. Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.

Are you talking about using a similar scene sequence starting and ending in the exact same places but that you took from your own footage? Then that's fine. But if you mean stealing the edited video and leaving it like that and claiming it as yours, then it is problematic indeed.
Besides, it is so much more fun to edit the video from your own footage on your own.
