Need help (if possible :( )

Post by VcR_PheX » Thu Feb 19, 2004 5:32 pm

Ok, this isn't a problem with a-m-v.org it's something on my computer effecting the banners on a-m-v.org. Ok i can NEVER see the banners on AMV, because theyres always some banner in place of it, that says like "you're at risk, people can see the sites u've gone to on ure comp!" and no im not a pervert lol. Ok now when i hover over the banner it says this: http://toolbar2.i-lookup.com/cgi-bin/climg.fcgi?id=150

Ok now i was thinking this was an annoying toolbar that was magically installed on my computer, the i-lookup toolbar, but when i go to add and remove programs, theres nothing of the sort on there, so i dont know how to get rid of this stupid thing. All i want is to be able to see the a-m-v.org banners, but its always "you're at risk" If this shoulnd't even be posted here, terribly sorry, but if anyone knowes wut this is or how to get rid of it, i would greatly appreciate, assistance. Thanks much :)[/url]

Your pc is filled with spyware.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ - Ad-Aware

Heh, last I heard, it was programs *like* spybot that keep you from viewing possibly 'dangerous' links - which is why you see a warning instead of the banner.

If you can, I'd try uninstalling spybot for a moment - if it doesn't fix the problem, you can always reinstall it and just run McAfee - it will find any suspicious programs and give you an option to delete them if it *is* spyware.

Woah! Don't reinstall it yet. See if the banners show up once you get rid of the anti-spyware program. That's the idea - the anti-spyware programs try to prevent you from downloading spyware by hiding (covering up) suspicious banners/etc.

Anyway, only reinstall it if removing it makes no difference. And I don't know if normal virus scanners look for suspicious programs - McAfee is one of the few I know of that will locate programs (Gator and crap like that).

Spybot wouldnt hijack banners. Its spyware itself which does that. There are advertisements out there that do exactly what he has described. As for spybot, make sure your detection rules are up to date. If you havent updated it in forever it probably wont catch everything. So make sure its up to date and try scanning your system again.

Disable your anti-virus and firewall software and see if they are visible. If they are then re-enable only one of them and check again to see which of those two are causing the problem.

OK. With a banner like that appearing, it's definately spyware/adware. Make sure you run the updaters on Spybot S&D (which is well accepted as one of the best programs out there) and Ad-Aware. If they don't pick anything up then.... Then you've some some new and bizarre variant of adware.

Alternately, pull up your firewall and look at what's running connections to external machines. There may be something connecting to a suspicious site, or a suspicious process/program. Either would give you a lead on exactly what this is.
