Karma

Post by mckeed » Mon Feb 16, 2004 1:34 pm

I thought i a little idea while conversing with someone at katsucon. We should have meta moterators who can rate posts. when people are idiots and assholes and not too friendly they can be flagged as not nice people. If they get enough flags, they get lumped into different groups with different waiting times between posts. So if someone is a real jerk it can take like 20 minutes or something to post and someone who is occasionally bad is like 5 minutes or something. If they are good after a certain period of time these infractions get removed and they can be a normal member od the org forums. That way you have to choose your posts carfully and maybe that person won't be a dick if he knows that there is an actualy penalty for it.

comments? questions?

Sounds like a cool idea.
Mind you, I'll probibly be one of the people to be deemed "a not so nice poster", but I'll take my chances :P

Someone would wind up being a jackass and give someone a rotten 'score', kind of like the opinion system here. I don't think it's a good idea.

I know there are other forums where posts are rated by other members(they end up rating the post --good, bad etc-- which in turn gives the user a rating) that doesn't affect them in the long run.

that is why the meta moderators would be chosen, from known reliable members. Forgot to put that in. That way the mods wouldn't be overwhelmed.

i know its on the to-do list, but conversations i have had with phade implied that he was unsure of how to implement this. I just wanted to see what people thought of this method.

As long as the mods or admin (or people they chose) are the ones doing it, I see no problem. It's much lighter than banning, after all, and quicker than having to PM repeat offenders to warn them.

Well... I haven't seen much use for it lately. Maybe I'm just not looking around enough, but I don't see that much hostility. :?

Well, it's not just a conceptual unsurety, even with a concept such as this one there has to be a lot of code written to make it happen. That's the main problem.

One possible solution would be moving to a forum system that had a karma system in place... but that raises all sorts of other issues.

there's nothign wrong wih the current system as far as i care. the inclusion of a rating system for a post will most likely just put more stress on the server if it were to be used to its full extent.

anyway, i'd rate this thread a 4/10.
