There seems to be a lot of people that don't like the 2 week waiting period. For instance I know a bunch of people in some chat rooms that would like to watch amvs, but they are just too lazy to wait 2 weeks for them, and thus decide not to even sign up at all.
Here is an alternative idea I had to the 2 week waiting system.
How about letting people download local links immediately, but limit the download bandwidth to 20kb/sec or 5 kb/sec or something. After the waiting period is up, they would be given full access.
The upside to this is if people want a bunch of amvs, they are going to have to spend a lot of time on the site to get them. Spending time here, they are likely to explore around, find some of the nifty features, maybe browse the forums some, etc.
This is opposed to the current situation where they sign up, leave for two weeks, then either come back or forget the site completely. I really think this sort of system might be more beneficial for getting more people involved in the site than the current system.

Hey,
It amazes me every time someone complains about the 2 week thing. Local storage is just an addition to what was here before which was just a bunch of links to videos. There are still some 4400 links to videos in the catalog. If new members get exhausted from looking at all of those first within 2 weeks, I don't think they are going to get much more enjoyment time out of the rest of the local vids.
But back to your point. If we allow new member to download at a low speed, they would just complain about downloading at a low speed, go away and then come back later. Newbies will always complain.
I have a better plan: allow video creators to "special release" their videos. Video creators who want to make their videos available without having newbies wait two weeks would donate a certain amount to the site for each video and then select which (if any) videos they would like to "special release". This would help ensure a revenue stream to pay for bandwidth while helping out newbie members with no patience.
How does that sound?

sounds good indeed, it may well work. Especially since it's usually the creators who feel most grateful for the hosting and would consider donating more for hosting their vids, so might as well make it more attractive.
As for the wait. I don't know, I wouldn't complain. Given the speed, quality and free-ness of service, 2 weeks is a short wait...
It puts me to shame as to how broke and useless I am...

This is a very nice idea, especially for those people who join to get one specific video (con winners, well-known titles). Of course, that could have a drawback (a grab and run scenario), but if the creators donate to make certain vids available it shouldn't hurt much. And if the price isn't too high, it would encourage more creators to donate who haven't done so yet.

I really support this special release idea, and would be quite willing to donate for it. Esp since according to Phade's panel at AWA, I am one of the worse abusers of bandwidth.
Besides, I'd get a much better feeling out of donating money for such a service rather than making a bogus account for people that I want to send the link to.
