It will promote them. Some ppl wont even give a video a chance for a download unless there is an X amount of opinions/views on it, or unless someone who is well known in the community says "Check out this vid guys!".

By bringing in this system one good opinion could spark the interest of other editers/downloaders. Thus an unknown gets recognized.
This is only somewhat true. I've never seen a truley great video by an unknown editor fall through the cracks because no one checked his video. there are some people that won;t check the vids unless there are a bunch of replies, yes, but there are also some that still will, and when those like it and leave replies, others check it out ;p

I mean look at whisper of the beast, and Istiv's Shounin Bushido. Those 2 creators wern't exactly well known before these 2 videos. Even so, there are other ways to get noticed, post in Opinion threads etc. This isn't realy a strong enough reason to implement the new system, though I do like the idea. I also agree we probably have more important things on the site to fix first though.

Yes, look at them. The only reason I even found out about them was because someone posted on another forums saying "Hey guys, check out this vid! blah blah blah". Before whisper of the beast was just another Naruto video to me, which i don't download anymore because of the general lack of anything new to them, but with that one person saying it was different, i checked it out and was blown out of my seat from how it wasn't "just another Naruto vid". I honestly don't mean to cut ppl short without giving them a chance, BUT, with Naruto vids being all the rage (just like how DBZ was a few years back), I am forced to think that.

So my counter measure to others thinking "Oh just another [insert common amv anime (ie. akira, naruto, dbz, eva... etc)] I aim for the route less traveled, use animes and songs that aren't used as much, which in turn is my own downfall because alot of ppl are looking for things they know and like.

People stick to what they know they like. With all the incredibly bad videos out there, it's hard to blame them too much. Besides, I sincerely doubt that changing the opinion system will change how people act that strongly.

Hmmm, we have several conversation/ticket systems currently in use on the site, some more planned, and some more needed or at least wanted. Examples include phpBB, opinions (limited to one post & one reply), video deletion requests (sort of multi-post/multi-reply); and probably some others I can't think of. We could use many more, for everything from adding anime to the db to reporting sit bugs to changing locked video information.

Right now, each one uses completely seperate tables, code, and presentation; that really isn't optimal. If someone has a suggestion (read: code) to fix this mess, and that code were to make adding a conversation thread for each op easy, I wouldn't have any objections (hint, hint).

Translation: it's a mess, and dero wants someone to unify all the systems for him.

The problem I see at the moment is that we have an op and the creator comment in one table sharing the last modified date. Any new system would have to preserve this information. I dunno, maybe it wouldn't be that bad but it sounds like a PITA.

Yes, I think its a given that the new system must be able to import all the old data. We're not about to throw away over 108,000 opinions.

Of course, throwing away 108,000 reviews would be ludicrous.

I think though if there is someone who has an idea how to do it without oo much ass-pain, wants to do it, and is pretty trustworthy they should be granted authorization from the administration to do so - as I recon that opinions are one of the main 'deals' of the org, and a 'response-orientated' system would almost certainly improve the quality thereof.

Must be the malevolent streak in me, but I want to see what would happen if all the opinions mysteriously disappeared Friday.

Come on do it !! PLEASE!! For me?
