Edit Favourite Anime script slow, and others.

Post by dkellis » Wed Jul 05, 2006 11:08 pm

So I figured, after several months away from the site, to update my Favourite Anime list.

Edit Profile, Edit Favourite Anime, click on the letter I wanted in the list, and Firefox hangs. Uh, okay. After a while (twenty to thirty seconds), I got a popup with the following message:
Warning: Unresponsive script
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
Followed by two buttons: "Stop script" and "Continue".

This happens every time I try to do something to the Favourite Anime list, whether modifying it or picking a letter from the index. Clicking "Stop script" will make the changes go through immediately, while "Continue" will let me wait for ten or more seconds before the changes go through.

This, needless to say, is fairly annoying.

I get the impression that this is some sort of new feature where we can drag-and-drop series names onto the Favourite Anime list (which doesn't even work that well, since I couldn't seem to scroll down from the position where the anime is listed to the Favourite Anime part). I'd suggest an option to turn this off.

If it matters, I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.4.

On another note, I tried to search the forums for any information about this. Entering the forums, clicking "Search", putting in "favourite anime" in the keywords field, gives me this error message:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 262144 bytes) in /srv/AnimeMusicVideos.org/phpBB/search.php on line 333
So please don't yell at me if there's already a thread on this, since I obviously can't easily search for it.

You can turn it off by not using firefox. According to my 'edit anime' page, that new function is only for firefox users:
If you are NOT using Firefox, you must use the old maunal method of filling in the numbers and hitting the "update" button. You can try the new super-cool method of editing the list, but unexpected results/errors may occur. Or you can (should) install Firefox by using the button below:
I use Internet Explorer 6.0. The old way still works just fine in that. It'll probably work in Opera, too, if you're anti-IE. ^.~

This must be the first time I've been recommended to use IE on a non-Microsoft site, much less one that recommends Firefox itself.

Ah, well, I don't speak for the site. And you don't need to switch to IE, you can just use it for a few minutes if you have it on your comp - just to avoid the new layout. Or, you can use anything but Firefox. I recommended Opera, too. :P

Back, Ari! BACK I SAY! Keep your foul Operatic advances away!

Anyway. DK, I suggest that you make sure you don't have any strange extensions mucking around with things. Also check what JavaScript stuff you have enabled and what you don't.

In the meantime, I can bug the main site coders.

Hey dkellis,

What kind of machine are you running? What letter did you click? Does the problem still occur now?

If you are running a very old computer or are doing something besides just web browsing that is maxing out the performace on your machine, this error may occur. I just now tried it on two different machines with equal success. The wimpy-est of the two being a 5-year-old PIII 1Ghz laptop with 512M RAM while running a virus scan in the background at the same time.

Letters clicked are, as far as I can remember, S, T, M, and P. Shuffling the order of the Favourite Anime also causes this problem, as does inputting the number into the field (the "old way") and hitting Update.

It's still happening now. Just tried.

Machine specs... let me dig that out.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.0 GHz
2GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 7900GT 256MB
Realtek AC97 Audio
250GB HDD, 108GB free

Not doing anything performance-intensive other than browsing the web.

Further testing reveals that the letters which have problems are, oddly, only consistently M and S. (Everything else, including P and T, don't seem to have any issues right now.) D and G are odd: if I have nothing but Firefox (regardless of number of windows) open, they take a while to load, but are otherwise fine. If I have Windows Explorer or Textpad or basically another program open, focus shifts to that program, but no error messages are spawned.

As a side note, I clicked on "All", sat waiting for a minute or so, got bored, microwaved something for 4 minutes 30 seconds, and then concluded that Firefox had well and truly hung. By contrast, the letter Q loaded almost instantly without problems.

Hm, yes, M does appear to produce a prodigious amount of lag. Could this be aliasing errors at work? More likely, I think, it's an effect of the sheer number of titles. M and S are two of the larger sections in the anime database.

Hey,

I tried it again on my wimpy machine and only the "all" list had a "script is not responding" message. When I clicked the "keep going" button, it finished up. What you can do is temporarily disable javasript when using that page and the manual process will still work.
