You know, having different language versions of the entire site is not a bad idea at all. And I don't think it would TERRIBLEY hard to code (then again I don't really know how the pages are being built so I probably don't know what I'm talking about). But take Doom9 for example. They offer nearly all of their content in many different languages. If anything, it'd be nice to somehow get a modular system setup for the navigation and search pages.
Of course for individual videos there's not much we can do about it, but I think it'd be a step in the right direction, considering how global of a community this has become.
Also, a translation of EADFAG would be awesome!

But this would be a damn hard job at first and pretty illusionary right now, I think, since people are needed to do this job and to moderate it afterwards. Like I mentioned before, it would be a nice beginning to offer translations for the most important pages.AtomX wrote:You know, having different language versions of the entire site is not a bad idea at all.
I actually translated the video upload page today and one problem I found is that there are alot of links - to the forum, the admin email guides etc. Now they are all in english again (and there's not much that can be done about it yet) so I would have to put disclaimers before these.
And even for translating only this one page I needed 90 minutes -_- So people who endure translating the whole site gets my deepest respect.
Especially EADFAG is damn hard. I tried translating it to German once, surrendered after 3 pages. The Arctic Tribe guys wanted to translate it to Finnish, surrendered, too AFAIK. Willow and a group of french guys wanted to translate it to French, they're stuck somewhere.
Though it would be damn helpful for others (I can't hear anymore whining about this guide being English when I point it to newbies which are not confident about their english skills), I figured I myself at least would be faster if I'd rewrite the guide with my own words and interpretations because of all the technical stuff to translate.
So, seeing some important pages in different languages would be nice, maybe we can build up on that, but translating the whole site would seriously take years. (Possibly not as long as it took me to learn halfway proper English which mostly eveloped on this site. People here should properly learn it, you can't get around without knowing proper English in the future, anyway, no matter where you live -_- but that's just my opinion)

Translating the whole site will be impossible for another reason: No matter how many translators you have, some things (besides the forums) have to be changed quickly. Like derobert's announcement about the routing issues. If something unexpected happens there's no time to wait for translations to X languages.
So if it ever happens, the option should be titled "Preferred language" or something like that. Everything that is available will appear in that language and the rest will stay as it is. And seeing just a few non-localized pages should motivate people to contribute.

Depends on the version of MySQL you're using. While all of them are capable of storing a sequence of octets, they have various problems with comparisons, couting characters, etc.trythil wrote:Not really...Zarxrax wrote: I believe there are some problems with mySQL regarding foreign language characters.
