Preventing/Correcting Category cluttering

Post by nokvok » Tue Sep 28, 2004 11:39 pm

Just read it in my Other suggestion thread that People tend to clutter their AMV describtions with simlpy every Category they can find (to make it more often to be found i can imagine).
Someone (Otohiko) meantioned a better clutter management System would be good... well, let me try :D

I got two thoughts:

1.) Exclusivity.
This would mean if i choose "Comedy" it prevents me from choosing "Drama", too, etc.
- drawback: this would only reduce cluttering to a minor extand cause there are not enought exclusivity pairs (and even with more complex kombo-exclusivity it does not work well). It also would prevent to correctly label "Black humor", etc. AMVs which are both Comedy and Drama at once...

2.)
the problems which are to solve here seemed me to require constant attention of an Human intelect. Now it would be kind moronic to expect an Admin to scan throught the whole AMV Databse for cluttered AMVs.
thus keep to Communism!
Eh well, make a "Report Cluttering" button and an aditional Database Entry.
With like 5 or 10 Reports for Cluttering an Admin gets a message. The Admin then checks the vid and removes the cluttering if neccessary (and writes a Warning to the Uploader!). If he thinks the AMV is labeled correctly he removes the Clutter-report counter and disables the Report function for this AMVs (of course it automatically has to be reenabled if the user changes his AMV labeling).

This way users can "scan" for cluttering (and wrong labeled AMVs in general) during normal DLing activity, taking this burden from the Admin, who than just has o approve or disapprove a reported AMV-labeling.

Of course the Report button would need an intuitive and Easy to grasp labeling itself, cause many new users woudl know what is meant wit Cluttering or what they are expected to report.

well, that were my ideas/thoughts regarding this Problem.

I've won... kinda...

This is more of a problem with the Contest listings than it is with the Category listings.

And there's really no easy way of fixing it, as far as I know...

If you can make a code that limits a person to say...3 categories, you'll never have cluttering again.

Of course, that means you won't have any accurate searching by category for those vids that mix genres. And yes, I've seen dramatic, romantic, and parodic (parodying movies mostly) action vids - 4 categories. But if you want, you could just call them parody and let those searching sort it out by trial and error.

I'd prefer the 4 category limit. I think it says somewhere that you 'should' only pick three, so 3 is already an uninforced limit. Make it 4 (a bonus for those who don't like restrictions) and prevent people from adding anything more than that.

I don't see any need to get specific (saying you can't have a video with horror and comedy, or a video with comedy and serious). Just cap the number of categories a person can choose - but leave enough room for those mixed vids.
