Rule against *music* piracy?
People seem to do fairly well with the "don't ask for information on where to download anime footage" rule, but today I saw several different threads of people asking for, and getting, information on where to download music. That's actually a lot more likely to get the org into trouble than fansub distribution would be - the RIAA tends to be a lot nastier than the anime distributors.
I'm not going to take a position on the morality of downloading music; but just for pragmatism, not wanting the org to get in trouble and all, and for consistency with the other rules, wouldn't it be a good idea to have a more clearly stated rule that requests for music downloads, aren't welcome?

i think there is a rule against posting links to downloadable music. i remember someone getting banned for posting one about a month ago.
but it doesn't seem to be written in the forum rules, so an addition to rule 7 would be helpful.

Although, if its a link to download songs that the band themselves have put up, as a means to get their music around, I would think that would be okay right?

Depends on the rule. If it's no links to pirated material (illegal mp3s) then those bands would be fine. But if it's to prohibit people from getting downloaded music to use for vids, then they wouldn't want links to any sort of downloadable songs - legal or not.J-0080 wrote:Although, if its a link to download songs that the band themselves have put up, as a means to get their music around, I would think that would be okay right?

I would think it ought to be, but there are subtleties - some bands have been known to put up links to "their" music without actually having the legal right to do so, because most bands are forced to sign away pretty much all their copyrights in favour of the labels. The music business is a very dirty business. If I were the mods, which I am not, I'd rather not have to police which downloads are or are not legal; it would be better to encourage people to put up links to the bands' Web sites instead, not to the music directly, and have a flat rule against linking to music downloads.J-0080 wrote:Although, if its a link to download songs that the band themselves have put up, as a means to get their music around, I would think that would be okay right?

Hey,
Actually, the rule is already there, implicitly.

Most downloadable music can be considered "booglegs", therefore music downloads are against the rules. Links to legitimate music are fine, though.Forum Rule #7 wrote: There shall be no posts containing or on how to obtain warez, crackz, serialz, porn/hentai, bootlegs, or downloadable anime episodes. Well, the word "bootleg" has a defined meaning to music fans - it means unauthorized fan-made concert recordings - so I don't know if it's really so clear that music download requests are rule violations, but whatever.Phade wrote:Most downloadable music can be considered "booglegs", therefore music downloads are against the rules.
