Norton has a habit of screwing itself up (and your computer/programs too)
Viruses can infect other files once they gain control of your computer. While that may not be the answer to what happened it is a possibility

Kmv you say mov could be used, does this mean it has been used to attack macs?

In theory they could have, but I don't recall a mac exploit ever being created (well, not yet anyway). However there was at least one exploit in the wild which was created for Windows.

There have actually been a few of vulnerabilities that included code execution to affect the mov container: In addition to the above there was a mov based annoyance circulating Facebook a while back which used an HREF track in the mov container to point your browser at some Javascript which attempted to raid your Facebook profile data.

All the above said, I still like the mov container - and it's sister the mp4.
