Processor Confusion the Memory Wall and GHz

You guys know your stuff.

I haven't really determined a price cap. I can get good deals on parts and barebones kits so that makes it easier. I'll pay a little more than I set out to do to have a computer that won't be crap next year. My current one is over 4 years old and still works well for about 700. Can't really game, but it does basic stuff and some video editing.

Of course all my games were for FAT 32 and I never found a way to work them on XP. Still have a DOS game or two as well.

I had a feeling as much about Duo, but I had to be sure Duo was better.

I guess the veredict on Pentium D isn't much better than P4. PD was about short lived too. Probably has some secret flaw that makes it blow up if drops below 50 cycles. Where is Reeves on that one?

I didn't expect P4 w/HT to suck so bad though.

I've searched the net, but I can't seem to find some sort of performance chart on these things. At least not that gives a clear read out of work load handling and uses.

Brands just push what they get deals on and Dell, the leader in dis-service, just gives you crap about this is good for that bubble charts. Nothing independet pops up with clear answers.

core2 vs athlon64 (also has some comparison to P4 and PD)
covers pretty much everything
(temp, power consumption, speed, gaming and editing/encoding benchmarks, and more)

I'd like to mention that back in early (?) 2004, I built an Athlon 64 3200+ w/512k cache, 1GB DDR SDRAM, and a 10K RPM SATA system drive. I've had no performance issues and everything still runs quickly.

Even if the Core 2 performs more quickly than the Athlon 64 dual-core, it's not worth the price. Most of the time, you won't notice the performance difference between them.

sorry for double post but

um Core 2 Duo CPU's are really cheap, did you even look at the prices compared to the AMD X2 CPU's ?

On Newegg, Athlon 64 FX dual-core FX-62 is $821, but you can get the similarly-performing dual-core FX-60 for only $629.

Also at Newegg, the cheapest Core 2 Extreme is $999.

I don't know about you, but I don't have an extra $400 to toss into a computer just to save 3 minutes rendering or to get 10 extra frames per second in an already well-performing game. (And video cards are more important for game performance.)

The real-world (NOT benchmarked) performance difference between Core 2 Extreme X6800 and the Athlon FX-60 is not worth $400.

all I said was the E6600 which retails for $340
witch you can do a pretty heavy OC on to almost math the performance of X6800

now as for the x1950xtx, this pic speaks for its self

that score was aquired with only 1 card, my friend was pissed off because he only got a score 15327 with both his AMD FX-62, and his 2x 7900GTX's OC as far as they can go
right now that card uses GDDR4, so there isnt programs aviible to push the single card to its full potiniel
Im wondering what 2 of them in CrossFire whout do
