Quick vid card question

Post by RavenW » Sat Oct 11, 2003 4:06 pm

I am building a new system and am wondering which would be better to get, the Radeon 9600pro or the Geforce fx 5600. I can find both for about the same price (trying to keep it cheap). :?:
Thanks for any assistance.

The Geforce...in my experiences, I've had more problems with ATIs than Geforces...I've got a 5200 FX and it works fine...$85 US for 128MB AGP. The ATI cards I've had (Rage Fury MAXX 32MB and Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB) were flimsy. The drivers for the ATI cards are bad...the Rage Fury had a problem with not having drivers for Windows 2000 period...the Radeon had tons of driver conflicts in Windows...I reinstalled Windows XP from scratch and it still didn't fix it...the Nvidia boards on the other hand have one central driver (the Detonator drivers) that are tuned for different boards.

For video editing, I'd go with the GeForce. It's frame rates are faster.

Also, the 256 MB version of the GeForce 5600 are bundled with video editing software. It comes with ULead Video Studio 6 SE. Besides graphic accelerator software, I don't see any application software with the ATI.

Here's an article for a complete comparison.

Frame rates have NOTHING to do with video editing ability.

Nvidia cards are CRAP for 2D performance and quality.

The radeon has lots of hardware video decoding support that nvidia just dont care about such as hardware bicubic resizing of direct show layers, hardware yuv to rgb conversion. The radeons are vastly superior in 2d applications which is what you are doing when editing.

As for 3D performance, again it's not all about frame rates. Nvidia are playing the fps war in the same was Intel are playing the GHz war. The important factor is quality and once Half Life 2 comes out there's going to be a whole bunch of graphical wonderfulness which you just wont be able to see on a geforce card.

The radeon has better anisotropic routines, better AA... I honestly dont see why anyone would choose nvidia over ATI these days. I also dont know why anyone still reads tomshardware - it being one of the most unreliable review websites in the world. Read a website written by people who only care about quality http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTI5LDEz

Also, be sure to check out anandtech's excellent card shootout that they did a few days ago.

The Radeon. If your other choices are limited only to the GeForce FX. The comparison between the FX and the Ti GeForce cards is like the comparison between the Celeron and Pentium CPUs. FX might be more affordable, but they also lack any guts, and basically suck in comparison to the Ti cards and the Radeons, just like Celeron sucks in comparison to everything.

Oh and I know that ATI make the Radeon cards and nVidia make the GeForce cards (and I also know they are not the same country)

So I didn't fuck up.
