First of all, don't edit with downloaded footage :/
Secondly, if you absolutely have to (or can't be convinced otherwise), you're going to want to use VirtualDubMod (which can be found in the AMVapp) to convert the files to Lagarith or HuffYUV. The reason for this is that downloaded footage is usually encoded in either DivX or XviD, and editing programs HATE those kinds of files. If you convert them to HuffYUV or Lagarith, your program will stop freezing up (and if it's still freezing up, then it's not because of the types of clips you're using, most likely).
Read more about all this here.

well...is there anything that you changed or downloaded around that time?
after some brief searching. You may be experiencing a hard drive failiure or have bad memory installed.
for the memory, you can get a standalone program such as Memtest
for the hard drive, your OS should have a built-in HD test. (I'm using windows XP home sp2, if you aren't using this, the directions/options may differ) go to: my computer, right-click the primary HD or suspect drive (usually the C: drive)
click properties, click the tools tab, and then click the "error-checking" button and follow the instructions.
you'll want to click "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"
you may have to restart your computer to do an in-depth scan.

after all this time i fixed it it was a bad hard drive (heres a tip don't smack your laptop in the part were your HDD sits it makes it not happy). My headphone/speakers were messing up like i had headphones in and the only way to fix it was to hit it i a certain spot. This spot just so happened to be right above my HDD. I got a new HDD from Newegg and installed it and went on my merry way and everything was working fine. then my speakers were freakin out. I then raised my hand to strike my laptop and realized then why my comp was messed up in the first place. (i broke it). well looking back it was funny but ill never hit my laptop again.
