I'm usually encoding my videos to be watched on a computer, by resizing them to 640x480 so the aspect ratio is correct. however, now I need to encode some videos to be viewed on a tv, and I'm not sure if I'll be doing it right. the vids will be either put on a dvd, or kept on my xbox to watch whenever I want.
now, I've watched amvs on my xbox before that were resized to 640x480, and it took care of adjusting it for the tv, so I assume I'd be ok with that, but I would like to get the best quality if possible, and I figure keeping the 720x480 footage would help. but, will the xbox display a 720x480 xvid file correctly on the tv? I think it will with the various settings in the media center, but I'm not sure.
also, do I need to worry about the framerate? I usually IVTC my footage before making an amv, so my xvid files are always 24fps instead of 29.7. I believe the xbox will make the conversion anyway, so is it ok to leave it at 24 and let the box do the work?
any advice on this would be welcome. thanks!

There's a big difference between just "displaying" videos (as an Xbox would do), and actually playing digital video through video hardware, such as a real output card (or inside a DVD player and such).
If you're going to "display" it on your Xbox, you can put it at whatever you want. The media player is going to handle displaying it. You won't want it interlaced, since it would display the interlacing, rather than handling it like video hardware would...
... well, I at least got you started :P. Someone who can explain it better than I can will certainly pop in.
