using divx/wmv etc as source
ok ive heard alot of people talk about how its bad to use divx/wmv and similar files for sources. i honestly dont see what the problem is. actualy, its a huge space saver. i rip a whole series from dvd to divx at low quality (usualt i get sizes about 100-150 , somtimes a bit higher), then i simply create the amv like i would normaly. after its finished (and ive made a few backups of the project file, for safety sake ), i rip the vob's of the epps epps ive used (again, 'cuase after im doen wtih a bov, i delete it, takes too much space for my liking) then, using dvd2avi i rip the scene's that i used to create the amv (to huffyuv) , i overrip a few seconds from the begining and end if each scene, to allow for a margin of error. then i open the project file, create another video bar in the time line, piece the huffyuv files into place, and encode it to divx. ok now this might seem a bit of a pain, esspecialy if your using alot of small, fast scene's in your amv, but it does mean that you can save alot of space on your hard disk and still get great quality for the final product.
oh and, no, vegas4 does not have any trouble handling files such as divx and wmv. i remember premier used to crash alot when i used to use divx files with it (and at that time i didnt use the above technique), so yeah, ya might have some problems with premier. then again, like ive said so many times, vegas4 0wnz.

The reason I don't use wmv/xvid/divx soures is the lack of quality and frame accuracy, as well as the problems those codecs cause in most editors (wmm and ShowBiz as well, though Showbiz is *much* worse than wmm when it comes to trying to look through a wmv file - it's as bad as VirtualDub).
But if you're switching those xvid encodes back to high quality huffyuv or avisynth files (bait and switch as I understand it), then you wouldn't have a quality issue. It would just come down to frame accuracy. Which, with xvid, isn't supposed to be as good as using huffyuv, so the cuts would differ from your xvid source and your huffyuv source. Sounds iffy to me.

The reasons why I don't do it, from most important to least important, arebum wrote:ok ive heard alot of people talk about how its bad to use divx/wmv and similar files for sources. i honestly dont see what the problem is. actualy, its a huge space saver.
(0) WMV sucks because it's a locked box.
(1) Decoding DivX takes more CPU time than it should. The CPU should spend VERY LITTLE time decoding frames for the monitor, and should be spending as much time as possible as giving me the quickest possible output of my compositing, as I often do complex composites, and I do NOT want to needlessly divert processor time.
(2) I have the space to keep VOBs, intermediate renders, and whatever else I might need around at all times.
(3) Unless you have an index, you CANNOT achieve frame-accurate cuts with DivX. I need this, because I very often cut to the last possible frame. Something tells me that Vegas does not automatically do this.
(4) I keep the VOBs around because I often do frame-by-frame manipulation on imagery. I don't want to work from DivX for something like that.

errrr, sory for this late reply. anyway, vegas may have issues with encoding audio in a certian way with xvid files. but as far as the actual video is concerned it has no problems. oh and, i tried mjpeg, an epp of nge still turned out to to be 2gigs, which is too much for me. guess il just stick with divx and then make it look shiny when i redo it in huffy
