XVID with DIVX fourcc code problem

Post by Yogurtron » Thu Jan 22, 2004 9:07 pm

Hey, I'm still having a problem with encoding to DIVX through XVID. I use XVID 2 pass (1st pass) to create the file.. and when i look at it with anything, be it WMP 6.4, virtual dub, etc.... the video doesn't run, and WMP gives me a classfactory error.

I've reinstalled XVID several times, using xvid 1.0 3rd beta, 2nd beta, and a much older one that i was used to it always working (unsure what it's version is). All have failed. I instaled fddshow to help, and it did nothing. I've reinstalled DirectX 9.0b.. heck, I've even reinstalled my video card drivers (granted, for a completely unrelated problem, but i just thought it fit into the general feeling of that rant).

Anyway, I can't describe it any better, so I put up an example file on the web, here . If ANYBODY can tell me ANYTHING to help fix this, it would be most appreciated.

Thank you very much ^_^

The first pass generates a stat file that the second pass uses to Make the best desision on how the quality should be once you give it a recommended filesize. After running the first pass go back into compression settings for the xvid codec and select 2nd pass internal.

In the AD and E's Video guide they have recommended settings for the first and second passes and the entire process step by step.

they also said that you could just stick with the XVID 1st pass, if it is around the size you like... I've used XVID 1st passes before, and they've worked just fine... but after my reformat this Christmas vacation... it's not been working the best.

I know I should be able to view the first pass.... oy... can any of you find any problem with the sample video i have online? (err, find any solution as to why it's not running (the video data SHOULD be in there, according to vDub and the filesize... but yeah...)

If you really want to keep the first pass make sure that "discard first pass" is unchecked in Xvid's Configuration, which is found in the two pass tab. I recommend just using 1 pass - quality though if you already know aren't going to go through both of the two passes in the two pass encode setup.

You can't use Xvid 1.0 betas in the same way as the the old xvid. 1st pass is not longer maximum quality - to do max quality you need to just do a constant quantiser 2 encode using the ranged.

You can choose divx as the codec but you need to be careful with your options. You cannot choose GMC or qpel and mpeg quantisers are funky too still I think.

Also, packed bitstream isnt recommended yet (as ffdshow cant deal with it).

Wow, by the code of primus, it works once more ^_^.

Thank you SOOOOO much AD ^_^ .

Out of curiosity what were these GMC, qpel, and packed bitstream options? i couldn't find such things in XVID (i was looking for them to make sure they were unchecked)

But yes, thank you soooo much.

The're under "..." next to the profiles. The gui has been redesigned slightly for the next release so these buttons say "more" instead of having you guess.
