Win Movie Maker 1, want to take audio off of video

I was experimenting with Windows Movie Maker, the one included with XP, and I have the footage, but when I play back the audio from the footage and the song I use clash. I just want to use the song, and I moved the slider to use the audio track, it's not working though. Any suggestions?

What kind of clip are you using - what format is it in?

You can't use an audio clip in wmm if it has video attached - you can silence the audio so you only see the video, but you can't do it the other way around. If you want to match that audio track to a different visual, you'll need to separate it *before* you import it.

If it's an avi file, you can do this easily by opening it in VirtualDub and choosing 'file,' 'save wav' - then you can import the wav file, audio only. If the file is in a format that won't open in VirtualDub, you need to convert it to something Vdub can read. You can use the DirectShowFilter to open most files with an avisynth script - this works for wmvs and older avi codecs. But things like rm and qt will have to be converted - do a google search and you can download free converters for this. Just be warned, if the file is compressed, the audio you rip from it may be garbled and not worth using.

Closing and re-opening WMM? That's about the only thing I can think of that would help when I used to have this problem. Or just play through various parts of the video for a while until the setting kicks in and you only hear the audio track audio.

But I haven't used the program in almost 2 years.
