Encoding help in DivX

Post by norskotaku » Tue Feb 03, 2004 11:48 am

since Xvid is not an option in some contests, I need some help figuring out the best settings for DivX. I've been using the A&E guide's settings for Xvid and have had amazing results, but I don't know how to acheive the same with DivX.

I currently have 5.05 installed, but am confused about all the options.

wouldn't it be nice if all cons would accept Xvid? ^_^

any help would be appreciated. I prefer sending my entries as DivX rather than as MPEG1 or 2, since I use Vdub for all my encoding.

if any information about my setup or video in question would help, just ask for it.

1) The methods in the guide, when followed to the letter, will make a file that is indistinguishable from a divx encode.

2) You should use a higher quality encoding method for contests. Either use mpeg2 or set quality in divx to maximum (slowest).

Yeah:

Most conventions usually end up converting whatever you give them to whatever their hardware will natively play. In the case of Quu and most anime contests he does the tech for, this will be MPEG-2.

The ideal thing to do is encode your video into a variety of formats from your master file (whether it be exported as HuffyUV, DV, QuickTime, whatever). Have yourself an archive-spec MPEG-2 from Quu's templates, have yourself a max-quality XviD... you'll probably even be able to throw all of these on the same CD-R, too, making it even easier for multiple back-ups.

Regardless, fall back on what AD gives for advice... whatever you encode, when it comes to convention / contests, give them the highest possible quality file you can. When things start getting blown up on huge screens, you can definitely tell who's using the downloaded DivX source :P.

ok, guess I've gotta bit the bullet and learn my way through TMPEG, huh?

I did install it and dl-ed the templates you have in the guide, but they were for 23.976, and since this was my first video done with avs, I skipped the steps to change it to 23.976 and left it as 24 fps. is that a problem? or should I convert the file now, even though that would alter the audio just a bit?

Just change the frame rate setting in TMPGEnc to 24 FPS. If it's locked, click on the words "Frame rate" (or whatever) to unlock it.
