Is it just me or are AMVs more of a guy thing?

Post by BishounenStalker » Mon Apr 14, 2003 2:43 pm

I'm not trying to push a FemiNazi point of view here by any means (I loathe FNs), this is just a curiosity of mine. Most of the creators at this site (the terribly active ones especially) seem to be mostly guys, and I'm simply curious as to why that is. And what leads me to believe that female AMV creators are a rarity is that even with a username like "BishounenStalker" and a sig that clearly states my name is Rachel, I'm still referred to as "dude" and "he" every once in a while.

So if it's true that AMVs are more of a guy's hobby, I'm extremely curious as to why. Is it that AMVs involve computers, and computers are traditionally a guy hobby, too (which it is)? Or is it that anime is more of a guy's interest as well (which it is)?

Honestly I can't say why but it is true. Simply more guys make AMVs than girls. Some would like to say because guys are more technical but girls can be just as much, I think it's part of that though as guys like to get into technical things a lot more than girls do on average so its more appealing to them.

It's technical. Girls shy away from technical stuff. I wish that weren't true, Comp Science classes aren't that fun with nearly all guys ^_^

Quantity vs quality: There's more guys, but the girls make better stuff.

I asked my wife (who is into computers BTW) this question and she noted that she knew of quite a few female creators out there - it's just that they're not into Anime. They are into other stuff, like Buffy.

Well, I agree with Zarxrax. In my vicinity, I'm the only male anime freak I know of, as compared about 3 or 4 girls. It's just that the girls have this computeraphobia or something...

Is anime a girls thing?

Are computers a girls thing?

Take the probability of an anime fan being female and multiply it by the probability of a compuer geek being female and you'll get the probability of an amv creator being female :)

Obviously the probability is increasing every year, but still ^^;;

I refer to people whom I have a deep respect for as Dude. that includes women. So If I do just means I am interested in bringing you into my sick twisted circle.

And actually it's just my experience, but the majority of the internet is male dominated. Why? Because women are more capable of getting friends and they have better things to do than to talk about anime on some web site on a saturday night... Just saying.

I don't know what some of these people are talking about... Women not interested in Technical Classes? I see just as many, if not more, women in the computer lab at the college.

Actually, there's more women on the 'Net than there are men, as a whole. There are more males than females in some sections of the Internet, though. (Look on your average open-source development project mailing list for an example.)

I don't think women aren't interested in technical things -- heck, as one example, the beginnings of computer science is marked by the achievements of women! However, with this stated, at my school[0], the gender balance is something like 80% male, 20% male.

I think it's a societal issue. A lot of women, despite having the skills for technical matters, don't go into technical fields because they're simply encouraged not to. Yet, at the same time, I think that people should ignore what mainstream society says, and pursue their own path...

So...yeah. I don't know. I'm also not a woman, so what would I know?

I think its just... one of those... things... I dunno, I just look at creaters as individuals, don't really care about the gender. I must say there are definately some very enthusiastic female editors out there though.
