We usually have a gathering on the Friday evening before the actual con starts.
This year, the con is in the Vancouver Hilton, but with over-flow rooms (and some activities) at the nearby Red Lion.
I looked at the Hilton Hotel restaurant:
http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/P ... /dining.doand visited with the maitre'd, and he said that in the evening, dining in the restaurant is pretty much full-dinner, off-the-menu fare.
Definitely a torpedo hit to the wallet. They also won't seem to offer the bar happy-hour munchies to be served at the table.
I will be working with the hotel to see if they can offer some kind of munchie-menu, finger foods, etc.
I also may bring out one or two wines from our private cellar (for those who are of age.)*
(* now enjoying a basic,
2007 Ecole 41 fruit-bomb w/ a little Shropshire and also some Basque goat cheese, unsalted almonds, and rye crisps...)
I have
temporarily reserved a table in the rear of the restaurant with a handy-dandy AC plug so I can set up a monitor and modest sound and we can go through some of the highlights, and also screen anything anyone wants to see. (PG though - this is in the middle of a restaurant, and so we don't want to freak out some other couple or family unrelated to the con who is visiting the restaurant for a nice Friday out.)
I will be visiting the Red Lion tomorrow to see if they have a more convenient option. I will make my decision in the next day or so following the meeting. I want:
- 8:30ish to 10:30ish
- cheap finger-food available
- not to bust everyone's wallet
- AC plug so I can have sound & video
- out of the way alcove so we don't bug non-convention diners

THIS FORUM over the next week for details.
A thread will appear there with the location, time & other details.
Since this is not an official con event, then editors who are not convention members would also be welcome to drop by and join us, if you are in the area or in driving range.
