Borders of Black?

Hn...it's quite annoying actually. I render a lagarith avi for my vid and even when I select not to have it letterboxed it still renders with borders on the bottom and top, i wouldn't mind so much except for the fact that i have a section with a character masked and the character pops up over the black borders. Is there a way to rectify this situation? I don't want to try anything that'll screw me over even worse than right now.
