divx encoded files are buggy in just about any editing program, your best bet is to use something like virtualdub to convert the files into something editable.
click the pretty red letters they can tell you more about the problem...
also how to convert:

use those to mark the beginning and the end of the "clips" you want so you can save room
both lagarith and huffyuv both make files that will take up a lot of file space, to save file space:
1. plan your video out more and take only the clips you need...
2. disable the audio by going to streams -> stream list-> disable stream
also I'd make "test clips" to see which is going to work better in your program...
