Threw together an ugly poster just so it wouldn't look so bland in here.

Second full amv and counting.

This was also my submission to AVCon. I'm not surprised it didn't win, but It's cool knowing it actually played there, even though I didn't get to see it.

The idea of this amv was to make it so that even if you haven't seen the anime, you could understand the story.
The story is that of the anime's. It follows four characters involved in a love.... square.
Please watch the amv first, and if you didn't understand anything, then read the story here after wards.

Special thanks to Darklydone for helping me encode this bitch :O He taught me a lot of stuff I didn't know about zarx, and helped me with what I needed to do to improve quality (including telling me about Media Player Classic, which I will forever use.)
Look forward to better quality vids from me thanks to Darklydone :P

And let me know how the quality looks. If your eyes are bleeding severely from watching this, then first off, I apologize, and secondly, I will do my best to make another better-quality file. I might be over-exaggerating right now, but it's probably my biggest concern.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think. :)

1) Black Fades.... Just... Please... No.... :_(
2) Sync [excluding the black fades] was actually pretty dang good. Scene selection was pretty good, and you really utilized some pretty great scenes to get your point across. The lip flappage at places could have been prevented, while others were forgivable [like when he's crying and talking, I can forgive]. I think that you could have really synced more to the drum beats thought. Not every drum beat obviously, but at least hit them every now and then.
3) Black Fades... WAI?!?!? :_____(
4) 2:33-2:55 Kind of seemed disjointed and odd to me. I think it's because there's no lyrics for you to sync to, and the beat sync kind of fell flat.
5) The ending was kind of anticlimatic from somebody that's never seen the anime before. It might have had some impact for the anime fans, but for me it was just kind of odd.
6) Looking back, the opening was also a little flat for me. Really, it only starts to pick up at :19 for me.
7) The wintery parade scene was WIN, and made me "WTF" at the AMV, because I realized "OMG THERE IS TWO CHICKS".
8) Conceptually, nothing new to the romance genre. But still pretty good, and the story came across pretty well.

4/5

I can sum up my opinions about the video in 5 words: Pretty-good-damn-black-fades.

I pretty much agree with everything, especially the anticlimatic parts. You pointed out all of the areas that I had concerns about. And yeah, looking back there were a crap load of black fades xD
Thanks a lot for the crit, and for watching :D

I thought this was pretty well done and that the black fades were executed well. I don't understand this hate for them, it's a pretty common transitional device used to denote the tone/mood or even the passage of time. For the most part, that's how you used it, so I don't see the big deal. I didn't used to really use them much until a few years ago a friend of mine who graduated from film school commented on how I was using them more often and viewed this as a good thing. It's possible that it's personal preference, but even if it was, I was more inclined to take technical advice from someone who does this sort of thing for a living. x: Now if you'd used them for beat sync over a static clip..... :nono: that's a different story, haha.

But I digress. Point is, I liked the video as it is, and I thought you did an excellent job.

I actually didn't like the anime, but maybe you will XD
And I'm flattered that you added it your personal collection and me to your alerts. I also appreciate the op. Thanks Ikore :)

Yeah, for me, I used black fades as a transition to mainly set the mood. It's nice to get a few opinions on it though.
And thanks, I'm really glad you liked it :P

I'm pretty much with code on this one cept for the black fades bit and about the ending. They didn't seem overused or anything to me though if you had used white flashes that many times it would have been bothersome. I think you had a good balance going on for transitions. Sync was great, so was flow/pacing. I thought the ending worked out well with the audio.

Actually my only real complaint is some of the lip-flaps. Some of them work cause of mood/lyrics (1:28, 1:43, etc...) but a few are kind of awkward (2:33, a few other random short lip flap spots).

Anyway great mood vid overall, enjoyed it: 4/5

Well I can tell you either didn't use DVD's or had some settings more geared towards speed on the encoder than quality but I don't use zarx so idk how that works (MeGUI ftw). That and if you did use the DVD's they have some gradienting/banding issues but you can learn more about how to deal with that stuff as you go if it really concerns you. |:>

IMHO though the quality was good enough as is, it's nothing to really worry about. Though I would recommend trying out MeGUI or some other gui depending on what zarx lets you tweak (I have no idea never used it).
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Yeah, I really should have removed more lipflap. I removed two scenes with lipflap, but those scenes that you mentioned I could have tweaked as well. I'll definitely keep that in mind next time.
I ripped the episodes from dvds awhile ago, and the quality was not the best. I managed to clean it up some, but issues remained. The banding I wish I could have done more about, but I'm so new to encoding to .mp4 and making avisynth scripts and such, that it'll be awhile before anything looks flawless xD

I've been practicing using zarx since I finished this video, and it actually has a lot of things that you can tweak that I still need to learn more about before messing with. I have meGUI, but I've actually never messed with it much. I'm up to anything really, so I'll probably mess around in it as well since you recommend it.
And thanks, I'm glad you liked it :)

Yeah, definitely don't take my opinion when it comes to black fades. It's just something I personally don't like in AMV's as a principle or anything in general. If others dig it, then kudos. |:>
