Streaming from animemusicvideos.org

Postby Clodo » Fri Mar 27, 2009 3:04 pm

I write here some experiment that i done for publish an AMV in streaming from a website, with Flash.

I take the AMV Attack Of The Otaku, the local version (H.264/MP3).

Put directly the file on my webserver, and show it with JW-FLV-PLAYER:
- Video works: Flash 10 support the H264 encoding and MP4 container.
- Audio doesn't work.
- The player need to download all the file before starting (aka, no streaming).

With Avidemux, i convert the audio to AAC (FAAC). Direct-copy of video, and same format (MP4).
Audio problem resolved.

For streaming, the .mp4 file need only to be "fixed" with MP4 FastStart:
H.264 MP4 is a great format for the web, as are all the MP4 variants. MP4 is both a part of Quicktime, and now a part of Flash. The problem is that many of the editors and converters out there, like Sony Vegas and Adobe Premier, produce MP4 files that don't work well on the Web.They won't progressively stream. The entire video has to download before it will start to play.

MP4 FastStart fixes the files so they can be streamed. It adjusts the MP4's metadata to allow for Flash players to play them right away (Fast Start), while it progressively downloads.

Streaming problem resolved.

You can view the AMV by Chiikaboom, in streaming, without re-encoding the video, in a topic of an italian forum, here (the second video, the biggest).

-------------------------
So, i'm writing here in this forum, because i'm thinking about showing video directly from animemusicvideos.org.

- Save bandwidth: people doesn't need to download an entire video to see if is interesting.
- No costs. Maybe only the JW-FLV-PLAYER: the license for one website cost €39.
- No additional space required: H264/AAC/STREAM FIX can be optional for a local version; if a local version is complaint, can be viewed in streaming. There isn't any other version: the version used by streaming are the SAME file of the version that can be downloaded.
- No server-side software required.
- Better for community feeling: i think there are many people that don't download AMV poor-rated; maybe with direct stream, more AMV can be more visibility.

What we think? (p.s. sorry for my english :P)

Thanks to both, i'm reading the linked topic.
I don't really understand where are the problems, allow streaming can be simply an encoding suggestions for AMV creators, and the staff need only to allow a bbcode-tag or description-tag that embed the player.
If the reason is to offer a benefit only for donators,

I'm waiting for the staff solution  , thanks again.

I seriously think streaming is a great idea. I'm one of those people who only takes the time to download AMVs by my fave editors and ones I hear alot of buzz about. I feel that I (and many others) would watch more videos if there were streaming.

Only if the streaming is better quality than the tube's lame SD quality. I'd rather d/l than watch that, personally.

the problem comes in that the people working on it are doing it for free in their spare time, this site isn't ran by an army of monkeys you know.

Well maybe that's the problem. Maybe it SHOULD be run by an army of monkeys. We should start the draft now.

Ok, I'm obviously kidding. Jokes aside, I'm not bothered by us not having streaming anyway. I'm perfectly okay with the system we have now. So whatever the admins (or whoever) feel like doing, and whenever they feel like doing it, it's fine with me.

In my test, the quality are EXACT THE SAME of the local download version, because is the same file.
There isn't required any re-encoding of video stream, if is x264.
Look the second video here.

We want something that is more consistent across the site and more accessible to people with slower connections. Streaming the original files is kind of out of the question. It isn't really a problem though as most of the code is pretty much complete, the things holding us back are primarily logistical in nature. I'm not sure how much longer it will be... could be a few weeks to a few+ months depending on how things go.
