This whole project came to place after I came up with the idea of using Zardonic's remix of Ora Pro Nobis with Kara no Kyoukai. (That video is now the part B of this project.) Some time later I also started to think that Scarborough Fair might also work with KnK and this led to the idea of editing two completely different AMVs out of the same anime side by side. I wanted to try out how this kind of double feature project would feel like to work with, and would these two concepts affect each other, and if so then how much.
Results were.. a bit mixed feeling. I had strong idea/concept of how the part B should look and feel like, so that part ended up having taken very little from part A.. apart maybe some toning down in pacing of part B. Other way around, I feel that the fast editing of part B shows also in the part A, which might be a bit too fast paced for the calm music, mood and athmosphere that I originaly visioned. What also didn't help was the fact that I lacked a strong vision and concept in the first place for the part A. I feel like it ended up going towards too many different directions, result being a bit of mess of a concept and symbolism. I'm a bit hesitant to call it a romance AMV, but there is that aspect in it too.
Some examples: I have this bad habit of mine to differentiate from the original story and create some new plotlines in my AMVs, but with this project I also wanted to make somewhat pure KnK fan AMV and not deviate too much from it.
Also the refenrences and symbolism from the lyrics are all over the place. (with Scarborough Fair itself being a canticle doesn' really help)
About the lyric backgrounds that I chose to go with. First you should know that Scarborough Fair was a recurring medieval era fair, that lasted over a month and began at the day of "Assumption of Virgin Mary" (which, I believe, curiously became a catholic dogma as late as 1950's). About the much discussed part "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme" I went with:
Parsley: Symbol of death. (Was used as a funeral decoration in ancient greek cultures)
Sage: Strenght and Wisdom. (Middle-ages, England. Also represents longevity and even immortality. Also called 'Salvia', which is derived from latin and means "to heal" or "to save")
Rosemary: Love and Remembrance (Connection to Scarborough Fair. Name itself coming from christian folklore.. "Rose of Mary", look it up)
Thyme: Courage and Bravery (Also love. Soldiers are know to use thyme to 'bring strength' back in Roman empire. Also common sigil used by mediaval knights in their crests and banners)
....to be honest, I might have had more fun diggin' in the history, symbolism and folklore, than in actual editing ;)
TL;DR:
I wanted to try making two very different video at the same time for shit and giggles. This one ended up being inferior to the other.
